20 Facts For All The Wonderful Ways The Body Works

SHARE
It's easy to see the ways humans used to practice medicine centuries ago as frighteningly wrong-headed, but it also speaks to how intensely complicated the human body is. The smallest things can have massive effects on it, it can work in ways that seem impossible at a glance, and it's constantly working even when we're not doing anything.

We've been trying to figure out exactly how the body works for as long as the institution of medicine has existed, but there are some neat facts that we've picked up along the way, and we've found some interesting ones collected by Did You Know?

And these 20 will be great for getting across the oddity and beauty of the human body.

1. This one makes sense in that sadness seems to ruin a lot of things for us.

It's pretty amazing that there's still some foods that can make it through the funk, though.

2. It's no secret as to why we need fiber,

but it's easy to forget just how much water we need to function properly. And that we can lose it in ways we wouldn't expect.

3. We always knew how important fire was to our survival,

but apparently it had a much subtler way of helping us all along.

4. When you've got as important a job as they do, you have to be able to do it fast.

That's also why it's so important to get blood loss under control. It can come out just as quickly.

5. For those of you who hate shaky-cam editing, please take a moment to thank your brain.

This also explains why trying to film in the first-person usually doesn't quite pan out.

6. Sure, there might have been some, um, logistical issues with that idea,

but I'd like to see what all those people who laughed at that agent came up with. Sometimes a big problem needs a weird solution.

7. As if there wasn't enough reason to hate stress.

It's kind of strange how it can so effectively target the best tool to eliminate it, too.

8. Wow, not only is someone saving a life with their organ, but they're giving a person a cheat code to it.

Though, organs can also carry bad leftovers that almost seem impossible, so it's a bit of a trade-off.

9. Yeah, it may take a while to get things going,

but this is why it's a bad idea too strain so much when the going gets tough.

10. Yeah, that risk-to-reward ratio sounds about right.

If someone is willing to take a risk like that in the name of science, they definitely deserve recognition for it.

11. There's a lot of work that goes into keeping us healthy.

But a lot of us don't really appreciate it until there's something wrong with our health.

12. Yeah, this is where the term "noseblind" comes from.

It may be annoying when you're trying to keep things fresh, but it's there for a reason.

13. This is definitely something to keep in mind when you're trying to pace yourself.

And there were already so many factors to keep track of.

14. It's one thing to hear something like this,

but there's something really chilling about seeing it in real time.

15. This seems like a great way to consult their peers about some of the weirder ailments they come across.

After all, even doctors can get stuck sometimes. And there's a lot of rare conditions out there.

16. Look at this, it's not hard to see how vulnerable the joints really are.

It only takes a slight misalignment for things to go wrong.

17. I'm not sure what prompted that song choice,

but it's really cool to see how something we do all the time is really done.

18. It may look unnerving, but this is such an amazing device.

This has the potential to save so many lives now that there's an easier way to transfer hearts.

19. To your brain, all the pain you experience is important.

And that's a fact we could all learn a lot from.

20. That seems awfully specific.

I wonder which of those traits affects intelligence the most? Because most people are probably going to mix-and-match between having these qualities and not.
