Reasons Why 'Top Gun' Is The Most Homoerotic Movie Ever

SHARE
Top Gun, the high-flying, totally radical '80s jet fighter piloting classic was all about being a super tough macho man in the '80s. Right? I mean, Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer wearing cool shades, making witty one liners at each other, and learning how to fly so they can help fight the good fight for the ol' US of A. Well there have been many people saying there might be more to it than that. In fact there has been quite the outpouring of people suggesting there is quite a different undertone to Top Gun.

The main thrust of the idea is that Top Gun is a very homoerotic movie with an underlying message about coming to terms with homosexuality.

In case you haven't seen Top Gun, it's about as patriotic as an eagle eating apple pie at a baseball game.

I mean, there's no shortage of shirtless or nearly nude dudes in the movie, longing stares, and suggestive lines.

Locker rooms aren't inherently gay, but sitting around half-naked and flexing at each other kinda is.

There is quite literally a character who demands "butts." He spends the entire scene saying he needs some butts!

This is just one of many, many lines in the movie that are seemingly blatant like this too.

But why don't we talk about the most incriminating scene in the movie a little bit first.

The oiliest, shiniest, sweatiest scene.

Ahhh, the volleyball scene. This one is a source of infinite reproductions, references, and parodies. A scene dedicated to a bunch of shirtless dudes hopping around, glistening in the sun.

Just look at Tom Cruise go.

And while they're all playing with the boys, "Playing With The Boys" is the backing track of the scene, really nailing home the central theme.

It is a really fitting song for the scene.

And who are they flexing and posing in front of? Why, an entire crowd of other shirtless dudes, of course. There are zerowomen in this scene.

I mean, I guess that makes sense, given it's a fighter pilot school in the '80s, but I think the point stands.

But there's so much more going on than just a sexually charged volleyball scene in jeans. So much more.

Ya feel me, Goose?

The relationship between Maverick and Goose is one that borders on being romantic. Given how close they are and just some of the ways they speak to each other, it's enough to make some couples jealous.

You can practically see the sparks flying.

And Maverick handles the loss of Goose much like one would handle the loss of a lover.

You know, the two were very close either way.

Thankfully he has Iceman to help him overcome his loss and move on, someone to comfort him and make everything better.

I just want someone to stare at me like Iceman and Maverick stare at each other.

But I think most convincing of all is how easy it was for someone to make something like this.

I think this says everything that need be said.

So Top Gun might be something very different than you would first suspect, and that something is beautiful.
