At 28-Weeks The Worry Began, But 1 Lb Preemie Beats Odds And Goes Home

SHARE
When we hear of people having babies, our minds immediately think about how monumental of an event it will be. From the first time they get the news, all the way to the reveal parties, the nine-month anticipation is truly exciting. Parents are so excited they even began to plan pre-school and start saving for a university education.

We rarely think about the alternative though, if a birth does not go to plan. Clare and Robert Payne-Cooper were faced with that harsh reality.

Little Savannah

For almost three years, Clare and Rob were trying for a baby. As you can imagine, they were ecstatic when they found out Clare was pregnant. Twenty eight weeks into the pregnancy, things took a horrible turn. After they found out she'd stopped growing, the doctors warned the new parents that their little girl would not survive.

"...she wasn’t developing."

"Doctors found I had restricted blood flow to my placenta and that’s why she wasn’t developing," Clare said. Expecting the worst, Savannah was born through an emergency C-section on November 1. Born two months premature, Savannah weighed just over a pound and her hand was smaller than her mom's wedding ring.

Doctors Were Amazed

Little Savannah was not about to give up though, and she started breathing on her own. Over the next 11 weeks, she fought for her life.

"She was just so tiny and was surrounded by teddy bears that were bigger than her.”

After those 11 weeks, Savannah ended up going home, weighing a total of six pounds. "Savannah is our little miracle, I couldn’t believe how small she was, my wedding ring was bigger than her hand," her excited mother stated.

One Happy Family

As Clare and Rob plan to take Savannah home, Clare reflected on the hospital that was so helpful to them: "We received so much support and help from the families we met during our time in hospital, they really helped us pull through a really difficult time." On April 2, the family will be holding a fundraising event to celebrate Savannah and to raise money for the hospital that helped her.

It truly takes a village to raise a child.
