People Are Struggling To Spot The Soldier In This Image

Sometimes our eyes aren’t as good as we think they are, and that is clearly evident in this photo series by German photographer, Simon Menner. His ongoing series ‘Camouflage’ shows landscapes of Northern Germany and the Apls with a hidden element that will stun you.

In each photo, there is an actual Germany Army sniper wearing real military camouflage gear hiding in the landscape.  Though they are only 30 to 50 feet away, it is almost impossible to spot them in the photo. Even when Menner prints them out at an enormous size, the photos never betray the soldier’s location. In real combat situations, the snipers are half a mile or more away. Can you spot them in these photos? Most people can't - and those that think they do are often wrong or have tricked themselves into believing they saw the soldier.

Menner took the idea of being afraid of what you can’t see and turned it on itself. In the modern world, things like fear, terror and surveillance are a constant part of our lives. He says that many of today’s threats are out of sight and that is why he wanted to use the snipers, who are so well hidden, to illustrate the point to extreme. His commentary on the unseen is both the fear of what we can't see and also that what we can't see may not be there to harm us, but to protect us.
