“Somebody that was famous signed it, and it’s very special to me,” Makenna explained.
“I want to save my allowance for a case and on Wednesday I’m going to take it to school with me for show and tell.”
Her mom, Angie, posted the story on Facebook, describing how Makenna was waiting in line and spotted a woman in military camo standing off to the side.
Her daughter asked permission to ask the soldier for an autograph instead because "she was more of a hero than any baseball player ever will be."
Even the baseball players were impressed, one of them telling Angie that she should be a proud mom.
From her emotional post, it's clear Angie couldn't be prouder, and her post quickly went viral as more and more people appreciated Makenna's choice of hero.
The soldier was US Army reservist Olyvia Russell, who was so surprised that she didn't even think to ask the girl's name when she signed the baseball. Luckily the power of Facebook allowed them to connect within a few hours.
“One of the weirdest best feelings ever,” Olyvia said. “I was like wow I should’ve gotten her name or something. It’s probably because like she’s never seen like a woman in uniform because there’s not as many of us out there.” They're hoping to get together soon.
