Surprisingly, it wasn't until 1846 that a doctor named Ignaz Semmelweis realized that washing his hands prevented him from spreading illnesses between procedures.
Yet sometimes these "a-ha" moments can be helpful for all of our daily lives. Today, we're going to look at a simple way to eat healthier without having to make any major changes and tell you how scientists have figured it out.

We all indulge a little too much sometimes.
Overeating often happens before you realize it, leaving you feeling uncomfortable and bloated for the rest of the day.
But researchers have a figured out a way to nip this behavior in the bud.
It turns out it's as simple as drinking water while you eat.
Wait, how does that work?
It has to do with how your brain "listens" to your stomach while you eat. To test this out, researchers had their subjects show up with an empty stomach and drink a milkshake.
Then they split their participants into two groups.
One group followed their shakes with a small, two-ounce glass of water while the other had a larger, 12-ounce glasses.
Then the researchers performed MRI scans on their subjects.
They found that the more water you put in your stomach, the more it fools a certain part of the brain into thinking you're full.
Sure enough, the subjects with the larger water glass also felt less hungry.
So the research team concluded that simply adding water distends the stomach and makes you feel full sooner so you can comfortably enjoy what you're eating.
Their findings were part of the European Nudge-it research project.
This project is all about finding simple lifestyle changes like this to promote healthier eating. After all, we all know how much of a chore it can normally be.
