1. Meryl Streep was told that she was too ugly for a part.
The 18-time Oscar nominated legend was once auditioning for a part in King Kong in 1976, and producer Dino De Laurentiis told his son in Italian "why did you bring me this ugly thing?" Streep replied in fluent Italian "I'm sorry I'm not pretty enough to be in King Kong." Guess who got the last laugh here.
2. Reese Witherspoon was too persistent to care.
After routinely being told she wasn't pretty, tall or smart enough for Hollywood when she first arrived, Witherspoon proved them all wrong. She admits that she was too stubborn to care about their opinions, and really, she's totally right.
3. Chrissy Teigen was "too heavy" for Forever 21.
Early in her career, Teigen was hired specifically by Forever 21 for a photoshoot, but shots were consistently sent to her agency commenting that Teigen was too heavy. Well, the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition doesn't seem to agree there, nor does the rest of Chrissy's impressive career.
4. Mindy Kaling was once offered a show she "wasn't pretty enough" for.
Before launching her own massively successful show, The Mindy Project, Kaling was offered a sketch comedy show that she was forced to audition for the part of herself, and then told she wouldn't be cast because she wasn't pretty enough. Joke's on them – just look at her success!
5. Kat Dennings was told to change everything – her teeth, her tan, her weight and more – to get better roles.
Thankfully, she knows how beautiful she already is. Being a bit stubborn paid off!
6. Sarah Jessica Parker was once rated "unsexiest woman alive" by Maxim.
The Sex and the City star has routinely had her looks criticized throughout her whole career, but the rating by Maximin 2008 was probably the most blatant and nasty of them.
7. Jessica Chastain was told she wasn't pretty enough – and that she should go blonde.
According to Jessica, it's only been in recent years that people have even told her that she was attractive, and that she was regularly advised to change her signature red hair for a blonde look to try and get more parts.
8. Lea Michele was told to get a nose job as soon as possible by her first agent.
She was told to get a nose job at 13. Obviously she didn't, and went on to play the unpopular girl in Glee. She's done incredibly well and still hasn't changed a thing about herself.
9. Winona Ryder was told mid-audition that she doesn't "have it."
Known as a heartthrob throughout the '90s, Ryder was cut off mid-audition and told to go home and go to school instead of trying to be an actress. Ryder credits her parents with giving her the confidence to see past that audition to remember her own value as a person.
10. Nia Vardalos was told by an agent that she wouldn't make it and was dropped.
Vardalos said her agent told her "You are not fat enough to be a character actress, and you're not pretty enough to be a leading lady. Plus, there are no Greek roles. So I can no longer represent you." She resolved to turn being Greek into the solution instead, and took all her funny stories and wrote a movie about it, leading to My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
11. Minka Kelly was told by a Playboy Bunny she needed lots of plastic surgery.
A Playboy Bunny offered to help Minka Kelly out with starting her career at 19, but her advice consisted of spending a few weeks with a plastic surgeon. Kelly opted out of this plan and instead got a part in Friday Night Lights instead.
12. Lizzy Caplan was told she wasn't pretty enough for the WB Network.
When Lizzy and her friend Lindsay Sloane were told they weren't pretty enough for the WB Network, they jokingly considered making shirts reading "I AM WB PRETTY!" But Lizzy's thankful it took time to become successful so she had time to adjust to Hollywood life!
