What Olympians Actually Get Paid When They Win The Gold

SHARE
Everybody wants to know what Olympic athletes make! And here's the scoop: some earn next to nothing and others can make bank. We're talking about "buying 10 houses and swimming in a pool of money" rich. Sure, athletes get the glory of standing on the podium and there's nothing wrong with silver and bronze medals. But if athletes win the gold? That's when they get to be famous AND rich.

Who else is basically glued to their screen while the Olympics are on?!

Listen, I love watching all the sports but really, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies are where it's at!

Gisele just killed it on the runway. Is anyone out there still questioning why she's the world's greatest supermodel?! NOBODY SHOULD BE QUESTIONING THAT.

But of course, it's always fun to root for your own country! Who else loves to bet on how many gold medals the top 3 countries will take?

And it's not all about the medals! Olympic athletes get the fame, glory and cash. And you won't believe how much they make!

1. The easiest way for Olympic athletes to make money from the Games is to bring home a medal! A TON of countries actually pay Olympics for the medals they win.

A non-profit called the United States Olympic Committee actually pays the athletes! They get $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze medals.

DAMN. That's even more incentive to get on that podium and make your country proud!

2. Not all athletes earn millions! Track & Field athletes actually make next to nothing! Apparently, a lot of them live below the poverty line. Some athletes from the US who rank in the top 10 made less than $15,000 a year!

But Usain Bolt? He's a name everyone knows! He made $20 million in prize money and bonuses within one year!

3. Even if you medal, some athletes don't get sponsorship deals! Adam Nelson was one of those athletes and decided to auction himself on eBay so he could pay the bills.

Adam got so much attention that he got a $12,000 deal to advertise a talking pill bottle. Yup, it's a thing that definitely exists and is not made up.

4. Everybody couldn't stop talking about Gabby Douglas in 2012. Her family couldn't pay any of the bills and was about to file bankruptcy until Gabby won the gold medal in gymnastics!

She secured MILLIONS in endorsement deals! Kellogg's and P&G reached out with deals for Gabby within hours of her winning the gold medal!

5. But a lot of athletes just come in to the Olympics with a ton of money. The highest paid athlete at Rio is Kevin Durant. He's made $56.2 million since last June.

A lot of his money also came from the medal pay out when he was on the 2012 Olympic basketball team for the US!

6. Sarah Robles is the strongest woman in America but she could barely afford to eat! She would visit food banks and ask for donations. She had to rely on donations to get herself to Rio!

Let's hope she does well in Rio and can secure some endorsement deals!
