16 Women Who Totally Shut Down Body Shamers In The Best Way

SHARE
Body shaming.

It's a term we hear and see everywhere.

Why, you ask? Why is it that everywhere you turn you hear about this person or that person being "shamed"?

My best guess is because it's literally happening everywhere. In schools, online, behind backs, in person — people are without limits when it comes to the ability to scrutinize someone else's body.

For most of us, this is our nightmare. And when it happens, it just confirms the negative things we probably already felt about ourselves.

But that's such crap!

We need to stand up for ourselves by just simply being ourselves. Choosing to defend your bod (even though you should never have to in the first place) can be a freeing experience.

These 16 women were assertive enough to call the haters out on their horrible comments.

SHARE this list with anyone who needs to know that their bod is a gorgeous bod.

1. When Selena Gomez chose to love her body and throw shade at the haters.

After rude comments were made on Selena's Instagram about her weight, she posted this photo with the caption, "I love being happy with me yall #theresmoretolove 😂"

2. When this personal trainer decided to photoshop herself to point out ridiculous beauty standards.

Cassey Ho is a personal trainer who, though she is extremely fit and healthy, has fallen victim to internet body shaming time and time again.

To hit back, she made a video highlighting some of the comments she's received and photoshopped herself on camera to point out the ridiculous beauty standards she refuses to accept.

3. When Melissa McCarthy took the right perspective on a nasty journalist.

Melissa has received way too much flack for what her body looks like.

Rex Reed, a reviewer for The New York Observer, once called Melissa "tractor-sized."

Horrible, right?

But Melissa had the best response —

"I felt really bad for someone who is swimming in so much hate. I just thought, that's someone who's in a really bad spot, and I am in such a happy spot. I laugh my head off every day with my husband and my kids who are mooning me and singing me songs."

4. When this woman responded to a bullied photo of herself by posting more.

When Sara posted a simple photo of herself in trendy clothes, the internet reared its ugly head, offering comments like, "It is NOT acceptable to wear booty shorts while being 200+ pounds. #sorrynotsorry."

How did Sara respond?

She posted MORE photos with the best caption: "Girls: Wear whatever the hell you want."

5. When Ariel Winter refused to let the internet tell her how to dress.

Ariel Winter is known for her role as the dorky brainer on the hit TV show Modern Family.

When she posted this graduation photo, the negative comments flooded in about what was appropriate for her to wear.

As for Ariel?

She simply refuses to apologize for "looking hot."

6. When the women of the internet came to the defense of a woman who was trolled by a total jerk.

When someone on Twitter tweeted out a picture of a beautiful women in a red and white gown beside a cheesecake, women from all over came to her defense!

Ah-mazing!

7. When Tyra Banks let the tabloids have it.

She gave a passionate speech about body shaming on her then talk show, The Tyra Banks Show, and ended it by famously saying, "Kiss my fat a**!"

8. When Amy Schumer hilariously kept it real about her body.

When Glamourmagazine referred to Amy as "plus-sized," she did not take kindly to it.

"I think there's nothing wrong with being plus size. Beautiful healthy women. Plus size is considered size 16 in America. I go between a size 6 and an 8. @glamourmag put me in their plus size only issue without asking or letting me know and it doesn't feel right to me.

"Young girls seeing my body type thinking that is plus size? What are your thoughts? Mine are not cool glamour not glamourous."

9. When this woman was shamed Pretty Woman-style.

"I don't usually post such pictures of myself on Facebook however what happened today should be shared to raise some awareness.

"The girl at the store today said that 'girls like me' shouldn't wear a bikini ! Well girl let me tell you something , im happy with myself and my biiiigggg tummy with tiger stripes 😂 but you could have said the same thing to the girl who finally got out there and had the courage to wear a bikini and you just killed her confidence with one stupid comment. You can be any size and look good ! Confidence is what makes you sexy and not just being a size 6 !

"Thankyou for fat shaming me ,thanks to you I got an awesome discount on my bikini 😂😂😂

But Mzznaki is self-assured and had this to say —

"Still confident...your rubbish comments ain't ruining my happiness...thanks to all for the compliments and best wishes...am honoured."

12. When Wentworth Miller got REAL about how damaging bullying can be.

OK, so not a woman. But —

Wentworth gained a little weight, and the internet went into full-force troll by turning him into a meme. He wrote this powerful message.

"Today I found myself the subject of an Internet meme. Not for the first time. This one, however, stands out from the rest," he wrote in a Facebook post. "In 2010, semi-retired from acting, I was keeping a low-profile for a number of reasons. First and foremost, I was suicidal. This is a subject I've since written about, spoken about, shared about. But at the time I suffered in silence. As so many do. The extent of my struggle known to very, very few."

"Long story short, I survived," he continued. "So do those pictures. I'm glad. Now, when I see that image of me in my red t-shirt, a rare smile on my face, I am reminded of my struggle. My endurance and my perseverance in the face of all kinds of demons. Some within. Some without. Like a dandelion up through the pavement, I persist."

13. When this mom took to the interwebs to defend her daughter's friend.

14. When Ariana Grande stuck it to 'em.

Body shaming doesn't always mean making fun of people who are overweight.

When Ariana was called a "stick" in a completely objectifying post, she fired back with wisdom.

Respect, girl.

15. When this barre fitness club fought back against cruel body-shaming hate mail.

When two barre class instructors received this incredibly rude piece of hate mail calling them fat, they had this to say on their website:

"Yesterday we received our first piece of hate mail. Now I realize you can't please everyone and I know barre isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, but this was different.

"A woman cut our article out of the Frederick News Post and proceeded to write insults all over it saying we have no place in the business of health and fitness, then she mailed it to us."

The post continued, "I'd really love for her to talk to the women in our classes who come to our studio because they feel comfortable in a judgement free zone. Barre East is a place where we encourage them to 'hold it for just 8 more counts' and we applaud them for finding their inner strength while making them feel like they are a part of something special."

At the end, the instructors wrote, "That said, we will be adding an inspiration wall to our Barre East Fitness Studio. A place where everyone can write a little pick me up, motivational quote or inspirational thought to each other at anytime. A place where you can get a little encouragement if you need it that particular day.

"A place where we can build each other up and celebrate our beauty, strength and courage both inside and out."

16. When Lena Dunham said, "Enough!"

Lena is known for baring all on her hit show Girls, and of course, a body can't just be a body, so she's had to deal with troll after troll.

After she posted this picture on Instagram, one user commented, "@lenadunham why would you post this pic on social media? nobody wants to see all that fat nasty blubber. have some respect for your body and show some self control at the dinner table for christ's sake. go on a diet ya fat pig!"

In response, Lena poignantly stated, "It wasn't a graphic picture—I was wearing men's boxers, and it turned into the most rabid, disgusting debate about women's bodies, and my Instagram page was somehow the hub for misogynists for the afternoon."
