Kolima has Wobbler Syndrome, a disease that affects the vertebrae in a dog's neck, causing compression to the nerves and spinal cord. Its name refers to the distinctive wobbly walk the dogs can have.
Besides a funny walk, the Syndrome can result in difficulty rising from the ground, lack of energy, and weakness.
This means that Kolima spends most of his day lying down, but he's also got the energy of a puppy since he's just over a year old. That's where Paolo came into the picture.
The six-year-old donkey has been with Caputo since Paolo was weaned.
According to Caputo, the only time Kolima gets the energy to play is when Paolo is around. At first, Paolo was indifferent to Kolima, but then the donkey seemed to understand that Kolima had mobility issues, and began to care for him.
Paolo plays with Kolima and curls up with him to share his heat.
Paolo will kneel down to make playing easier for Kolima, sharing a hay bed with the dog.
Paolo has adopted Kolima as his friend to take care of.
