Can You Solve This Puzzling Puzzle? Only A Few Can!

SHARE
A good puzzle isn't just a simple brain teaser – it's a challenge that draws on multiple areas of knowledge and gets you thinking about how everything fits together.

The puzzle below provides one heck of a challenge. And it comes from a surprising source: a Soviet-era kid's magazine! I think once you've had a chance to peruse the puzzle you'll agree that kids in the Soviet Union probably would have had more fun reading about Archie and Jughead. But you can't say the Soviets didn't challenge their brains!

Best of luck! Let us know how you did!

Here are the questions and the puzzle:

1. How many tourists are at the camp?

2. When did they arrive, today or days before?

3. How did they get there?

4. Is there a town nearby?

5. Which way is the wind blowing, north or south?

6. What time of day is it?

7. Where did Alex go?

8. What was the name of the person on duty yesterday?

9. What day is it today?

Since the puzzle comes from Soviet times, here's some Soviet-flavored encouragement for you.

Study up and study hard! It's a doozy!

The answers begin below.

1. How many tourists are staying at the camp?

Four, four tourists! You can make out four spoons and plates on the picnic blanket, one for each tourist, and four names on the list.

2. When did they arrive, today or days before?

Well, a spider has had time to build a web between the tent and the tree, so they've been there for a few days at least.

3. How did they get there?

The oars by the tree indicate they got there by boat.

4. Is there a town nearby?

Yes! There's a chicken walking around, and they don't roam – the wild so some civilization must be nearby.

5. Which way is the wind blowing, north or south?

The windsock on top of the tent, taken with the long branches that grow on the south side of trees, show that the wind is blowing south.

6. What time of day is it?

Once we've determined which is north and south, we can figure out east and west, too. That will tell us where the sun is shining from – the east – and so we know that it's morning.

7. Where did Alex go?

Alex is chasing butterflies. We can see the net over the hedges and the butterfly he's trying to catch.

8. What was the name of the person on duty yesterday?

Colin, rooting through the backpack marked with a C, was on duty yesterday. Alex is off catching butterflies, the tripod sticking out of James's bag shows that he's the one taking pictures, leaving Peter to be on duty today – and according to the schedule, Colin had duty before Peter.

9. What day is it today?

August 8th. There's a watermelon on the ground and they ripen in August, and Peter has duty on the 8th.

That was a tough one! Did you emerge victorious?

How did you do?
