19 Terrifying Old Photos That Will Keep You Up At Night

Looking at things from the past is always a lot of fun. It seems like we've progressed so quickly in the past 50 years, so taking the time to ponder what the "old days" were like is something I thoroughly enjoy. What I find extremely interesting (but terrifying) are the kinds of devices and other things they had long, long ago. If you're looking to lose some sleep, keep on scrolling!

1. A Good Ol' Carnival Prop

"Hey guys, come enjoy this mangled, mummified head!" 

2. Heaven's Gate Mass Suicide

The people from the Heaven's Gate cult were all found dead on March 26, 1997. They killed themselves thinking that their souls would be transported to a spaceship trailing the Hale-Bopp comet. There was a total of 39 bodies found.

3. Blanche Monnier

Blanche Monnier was starved and forced to live in her own excrement until she was found, 24 years later. She hadn't seen sunlight for the entirety of her captivity.

4. Bloodletting Device

This device, known as a fleam, was used for blood-letting.

5. Witch's Chair

This looks like a super comfortable chair! Where can I get one?

These bonesaws were apparently made to be dull. Hey, if you're in for surgery, we may as well put you through some more pain.

People used these as prosthetic toes. This one was found in the tomb of Tabeketenmut.

I feel like calling them "freak shows" is a tad bit rude, but hey, it's not my name for it. These people did some pretty creepy things...

14. John Torrington's Corpse

His ship had wrecked on an expedition to find the "northwest passage," resulting in him and his crew having to trek back on foot. No one made it back to civilization alive, but John was the first to die and was buried.

This picture depicts the apparent remains of a victim who "spontaneously combusted."

16. A Hotel I Wouldn't Want To Visit

If you look in the pool, you can see someone's corpse.

Her head was kept as a relic to haunt people... Forever.
