She didn’t fall in love with her prince at first sight. Instead, she hit him over the head with a frying pan.
And, sure, there’s no denying the compatibility between the two, but she’s never willing to lose herself to romance. She fell in love on her own, based on Eugene’s merits and his sarcastic sense of humor.
But, in Tangled: Before Ever After, Rapunzel says no when Eugene (aka Flynn Rider) proposes, even though it’s in front of the entire court.
In the past, every other Disney princess has said yes, had a fairytale wedding, and supposedly gone on to live a very happy and content life, but Tangledpresents things a bit more realistically. She downright panics!
Eugene is left on bended knee, ring in hand, utterly dejected and it’s one of the most powerful things Disney has done, breaking the mold for Disney princesses.
By saying no, Rapunzel seems to be telling young girls everywhere not to be pressured by societal expectations and to do what they believe is right for themselves.
Rapunzel tells Eugene that she’s not ready to be tied down because she has a life to live.
And who can blame her? She spent most of her life living in a tower, locked away from the world. It’s only natural to want to have a bit of freedom!
We know that the two are eventually going to tie the knot.
Still, Rapunzel’s initial refusal and insistence that she live a life according to her own terms—at least for a little while—is a refreshing change.
Thank you, Disney, for showing that marriage isn't the only choice.
Keep inspiring us!
