Why People Aren't Sure If College Is Really Worth It

Why People Aren't Sure If College Is Really Worth It

Once upon a time, it seemed like life had some pretty standard steps if you weren't sure what you wanted. You were born, you went to school, you went to college and you got a good enough job to handle your needs. From there, you could do whatever you wanted and as long as you didn't have a bad reputation chasing you, no door would stay closed to you for long.

Yet if it was ever really that simple, it certainly isn't now. While it's true that even 40 years ago, people weren't quite getting the jobs their degrees seemed to prepare them for, they also weren't paying anywhere near what it takes to get a degree now.

By and large, parents and guidance counselors still expect us to go to college, and so many jobs seem to require a degree. But are they working off of outdated information? Will you end up wasting your time getting a degree you can't do anything with?

Let's have a look at the pros and cons of entering the college life and see if we can't clear up some of these questions.

Please SHAREthis with anyone you know who isn't sure where they're going.

Let's get the obvious out of the way first. College is expensive.

It can depend on where you go but it's not uncommon for a four-year degree to cost up to $60,000 per year. These high prices force many students to take out loans with payments averaging about $400 per month.

This wouldn't be so bad if you were guaranteed a good job after graduation.

Of course, we all know by now that this often isn't how degrees work. In a study, fewer than two in five hiring managers thought recent graduates were prepared to get a job in their field of study, so many are stuck playing the waiting game.

In the meantime, there's a good chance they'll end up fighting for clerical jobs that once didn't require a degree or end up working in food service.

Even the president seemed to suggest that a degree isn't always that helpful.

Back in 2014, he said that "folks can make a lot more, potentially, with skilled manufacturing or the trades than they might with an art history degree."

He ended up apologizing for this statement, but it's hard not to agree when you're staring down the barrel of high costs and an uncertain future.

When those two problems come together, they create debt.

The average student who graduated with a bachelor's degree in 2012 owes about $29,400 in student debt, but it's not unheard of for some to rack up over $50,000 in loans before they make it through. That debt also doesn't go away if you drop out or don't graduate.

The good news is students who make their payments will eventually have their debt forgiven. The bad news is it could take up to 20 years.

If if seems the answer is to simply not go to college, it's unfortunately not quite that simple.

Despite all these concerns, you still need a bachelor's degree before many employers will even talk to you.

For instance, even though only 19% of executive secretaries and executive assistants have a bachelor's degree, it's still required in 65% of postings for these positions. College graduates also tend to earn $17,500 more on a yearly basis than those with only a high school diploma.

Your success can often depend on the type of degree you have.

According to the PayScale research firm, engineering seemed to pay off the most since graduates can apparently expect to make between $500,000 and $1.1 million more than those who never went to college after 20 years.

It's commonly believed that arts and humanities degrees are a fast track to working at Starbucks, but that isn't necessarily the case. However, the opportunities that come with these degrees can get a lot more hit or miss.

For arts degrees, success seems to depend on where you are.

According to PayScale, an arts degree is more likely to pay off if it came from schools like Columbia or UC San Diego. An arts degree from Kentucky's Murray State University, on the other hand, was found to net graduates $147,000 less over 20 years than a high school graduate.

This likely has more to do with Kentucky's economy than any problems with Murray State itself, but it does show how much of a difference your location can make.

Of course, President Obama could be right about skilled trades too.

If you're built for it, this kind of work can be more reliable in ways that a four-year degree isn't. However, even if you decide that a four-year degree isn't worth it, it looks like some kind of post-secondary training can get you farther than just a high school diploma.

Don't forget to SHARE and help others avoid some serious post-secondary pitfalls.

14 Behind-The-Scenes Facts About The Filming Of 'Straight Outta Compton'

14 Behind-The-Scenes Facts About The Filming Of 'Straight Outta Compton'

Straight Outta Compton exploded into movie theaters and became one of the most successful music biopics. With all the trouble the original NWA got into, you wouldn't expect the movie to be filmed without something happening. Well, let me tell you – from actual shootouts to important stars not wanting to be involved, filming the NWA's origin story was no walk in the park for the filmmakers or the actors. Take a look at what made this movie so good – and so difficult to make!

1. The letter sent from the FBI to NWA is housed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

2. Straight Outta Compton beat Walk the Line for biggest opening of a music biopic!

3. Eazy-E and M.C. Ren actually belonged to the Kelly Park Compton Crips.

They used to sell drugs and run with the gang before NWA formed.

4. To help the actors get into character, they re-recorded NWA's entire Straight Outta Comptonalbum.

5. "Bye, Felicia" was added by O'Shea Jackson Jr. as an homage to his father.

6. The film was released 20 years after Eazy-E's death.

7. Dr. Dre was inspired by the film to record his first album in over 15 years.

It dropped on August 7th, 2015.

8. The film hasn't been shown in Compton because the town doesn't have a movie theater!

9. While filming the movie in Compton, the cast and crew witnessed a drive-by shooting outside the Compton courthouse.

No one was injured, but there were gang signs flashed.

10. F. Gary Gray, the director of the movie, also directed the music video for Natural Born Killaz.

11. Dr. Dre didn't want to be involved with the movie, but Ice Cube sent him the script and having F. Gary Gray as the director sealed the deal.

12. Ice Cube is actually from Baldwin Hills, not from Compton.

Close enough, though!

13. O'Shea Jackson Jr., who plays his father Ice Cube, auditioned for two years, wanting desperately to get the role.

14. Snoop Dogg was actually calling himself Snoop Doggy Dogg at the time portrayed in the movie, not Snoop 'D-O-Double-G'

12 Things To Do With An Avocado Pit (Other Than Throw It Out)

12 Things To Do With An Avocado Pit (Other Than Throw It Out)

People have been jumping on the avocado bandwagon lately. We all know that they are full of healthy fats and they taste freaking awesome. A little guac on those nachos? No, Sir, how about a LOT of guac on those nachos. Mmmm. Guac. Anyway, so while we're putting slices of the green delight on our burgers and chopping them up for our salads and thinking that we're getting all the nutrients, we're actually going around tossing out the most important part of the fruit. The avocado seed is the one thing that we keep to try and keep our avocados from browning too much, but other than that, we see them as useless and toss them. If you've been doing that, you need to stop. Seriously. You're throwing out amazing health benefits. They're even saying that avocado seeds are the new superfruit. WHAT?! And this whole time we've been going around thing that it's just garbage. NOPE. Here is everything you need to know about avocado seeds, including how to eat them and what good they'll do for you.

Antioxidants

Did you know that 70% of the antioxidants from avocado is actually hidden in the seed? Yup. And here you've been just tossing that seed out like garbage.

Fiber

Avocado seeds have more soluble fiber than most foods on this beautiful green earth of ours. That's a whooooole lotta fiber!

Potassium

Yup. If you're looking for potassium, look no further than the modest avocado seed.

Reduces joint pain

Inflammation and joint pain can be eased through the ingestion of avocado seeds.

Skin health

The healthy bits of the seed help to create collagen and fix damages to your skin cells.

Strengthens your defences

Helps to fight against illness and diseases.

Digestive health

Avocado seeds have been used to treat numerous digestive issues such as gastric ulcers and dysentery.

Helps you lose weight

The fiber helps to keeps your blood sugar levels in check and regulated and also helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer, which means that you'll be able to kick that 2:30 sugar craving.

So how do you go about eating an avocado seed? It's not like it's something that you can just munch on. It's large, hard, and intimidating to try and figure out. No worries. We've got you covered. Here are some ways to open this wonderful little superfruit secret and some recipes to get you started on your way to consuming the health benefits.

Whack and crack it

Apparently a good swing with the knife will split that seed for you. You can then chop it.

Dry and grate it

Clean the pit and leave it alone for 4-5 days to dry out. Then you can grate it into salads or smoothies.

Throw it in a food processor

If you have a good food processor, you can chuck in the pit and let it do the work. Now, please let me reiterate here that you need a goodfood processor for this. The seed is hard and will dull the blades of a sub-par processor. If you don't have a good one, I would go the chopping route first and then put it in the processor.

Smash it

If you have some pent-up aggression that you're trying to get out, then this is the perfect way. Place your seed in a baggie and close it up. Then take a hammer and smash that thing into pieces. Cheap therapy.

Make avocado tea

Boil seed pieces for a while until the water starts to look brown. Then you can filter and enjoy.

Green Goddess Smoothie

Place the following into a blender and blend until smooth:
1/2 avocado seed

1/2 avocado

1 cup of almond milk or water

1 ripe pear

1/2 apple

1 cup of organic spinach

1 small piece of ginger (grated)

Fresh smoothie

Toss all of these things into your blender and have at it:

4 apples

2 lemons without peel

1 peeled banana

1 small bunch parsley

1 cup spinach

1 stalk celery

Quarter piece of ginger

½ avocado seed

Make a capsule

If you have ground up your seed into a powder, you can buy capsules at your local health food store and fill up the capsules with this fiber-rich powder and take it as a supplement! Always consult your doctor before adding supplements into your daily diet.

So enjoy your guac and your avocado sandwiches, but stop throwing out all those nutrients in the pit. Take advantage of this new "superfruit" and enjoy all the wonderful benefits that are packed inside this little seed. What do you think? Will you stop throwing out the seed now that you know this?

Miley Cyrus Looks Just Like Hannah Montana Again

Miley Cyrus Looks Just Like Hannah Montana Again

Okay guys, settle in for a bunch of pictures that are about to blow your mind and make you feel all kinds of nostalgia. We all thought that the days of Miley dressing up as Hannah Montana were long over, and we had finally made peace with that. Miley made a new name for herself and ditched the blonde wig. She started wearing anything and everything that was colourful, sparkly, and/or provocative. Well, five years later it looks like we have a glimpse of the old Miley, the Hannah Montana Miley, and we love it. By the way, I may have "Best of Both Worlds" stuck in my head right now, you've been warned.

Hannah Montana was my after school religion. I lived for Miles and her redneck fam.

You get the limo out front, hottest styles, every shoe, every color...

Yeah, when you're famous it can be kinda fun, it's really you but no one ever discovers...

She did a great job on the show and we miss it dearly. We also miss this Miley.

In some ways you're just like all your friends, but on stage you're a star...

But Miley was ready to grow up and move on with her career, it was time to break free from her Disney days.

YOU GET THE BEEEEEST OF BOTH WORLDS

It didn't take long for Miley to make it clear that Hannah was dead and never coming back.

Chill it out, take it slow then you rock out the show

We embraced this new Miley with open arms, for the most part anyway. She definitely turned away a few angry parents, but that really didn't bother her much.

YOU GET THE BEEEEEST OF BOTH WORLDS

She's just bein' Miley.

Mix it all together and you know that it's the best of both worlds (okay I'm done singing now).

We were just getting used to this eccentric Miley when she hits us with this new look.

Hannah is that you??!?!?

Miley is filming for a new show, Crisis in Six, and her character wears a long blonde wig – one that brings us back to the Hannah Montanadays.

We're losing our minds just a little bit, we really hope that Miley falls in love with this look and decides to make it permanent.

What do you think of this new look on Miley? Does it remind you of Hannah? COMMENTand tell us your thoughts!
