15 Vintage Abnormalities We Bet You Haven't Seen

SHARE
In this job, I come across some pretty crazy things. People who've put cement in their face as a cheap version of Botox (spoiler alert, it didn't work), a boy with way too many fingers, a guy who thought a rock was Big Foot's skull — the list goes on and on.

But time and again, history proves that what we think is messed up now is child's play compared to the past.

Seriously. I know there was like a lot of malnutrition and lack of vaccines, but how could it be THIS bad?!

Take a look and SHARE with us the medical oddity you think is the most insane.

1. Siblings who prove you can never be too close.

Chang and Eng Bunker were attached identical twins born in 1811. The pair toured the world with PT Barnum and gained global fame in the sideshow. At 28, the two retired, took up farming, married sisters, and had 21 children. Yes. That's not a typo. 21.

2. He was born too early.

This man suffered from Von Recklinghausen’s Disease, a disorder where your nerves grow an incredible amount of tumors. The scariest part? If one parent suffers from the illness, the child has a 50 percent chance of inheriting it.

3. The civil war was full of atrocities, but THIS came out too!

Here we have an artificial hand that allowed the wearer to hold tools by opening and closing the elbow. It was created during the civil war to help survivors, many of whom lost a limb due to amputation.

4. Look up. WAY up.

Meet John Aasen, the tallest man who was also likely the world's biggest ham. He toured all over, even appearing in movies. He was just over seven-feet-tall, so he likely had a bunch of #tallpeopleproblems.

Aasen was super tall, but I feel like the next person had way more problems...

5. It must have been a long six years...

Madame Dimanche, or Widow Sunday, was a French woman who had a horn grow out of the center of her forehead over six years. It was eventually removed by a French surgeon after growing 9.8 inches in length.

6. That looks like quite the headache...

This was found in a medical journal in 1821.

7. You think YOUR back hurts?

Nowadays you can fix a spine that has started to curve with a brace — but you couldn't do that way back when. This caused the affected person's spine to twist almost into a question mark.

8. This unfortunate disorder still exists today.

Ectrodactyly is a birth defect where the person will be born with cleft hands and/or feet. People would be called "lobsters" as they were missing the digits in the middle of their hands and feet, making it look like they had claws. The next subject could happen too, but hopefully not often.

9. Trains are freaking dangerous...

Especially in the past before we had more regulations. This is J. McKnight, the second famous subject of American physician James Buckner Luckie. Luckie performed amputations before the civil war, including two successful triple amputations. This included McKnight after he suffered a railway accident.

10. A lot of leg, and whole lot of heart.

George Lippert was a man who had three legs and two hearts. While many of you may think he was basically a Time Lord (and there's nothing to disprove this really), he was known as an American sideshow during the 1800s.

11. This man suffered from elephantiasis. And I mean suffered.

Elephantiasis is a rare condition where areas of the body become grossly enlarged. This man suffered from the condition and begged for amputation. The condition is most common in tropical regions, such as Southeast Asia, India, Africa, and South America.

12. Meet Blanche Dumas

This French courtesan was known for her three legs, four breasts, and two vaginas. She is also rumored to have had an affair with a man who had three legs and, you guessed it, two penises.

13. The sad reality of cyclopia.

While many people like to believe the cyclops are this Greek myth where they grew into strong monsters, the reality is quite heartbreaking. Cyclopia is a condition where a child is born with both eyes merged into one. Unfortunately, the condition is lethal to babies, but today doctors are able to find the rare condition during pregnancy.

14. People actually did this TO THEMSELVES

I get annoyed when I have my nails like half an inch long, but a Chinese society used to grow theirs out to intense lengths as a sign of wealth and high social status.

15. And finally: Why you should also have safe sex.

He died of syphilis. It's always syphilis. Seriously.

Stay safe kids, and COMMENTto let us know which condition you found the most fascinating!
