12 Things You Never Knew About Zooey Deschanel

Who's that girl? I said, who's that girl? It's ZOOEY.

If you're a warm-blooded American human you'll know that terrible opening line is ripped off of Zooey Deschanel's show, New Girl. The show plays up on the fact that Zooey has a love for awkward comedy, singing and unnerving cheerfulness. But true fans remember her from Elf where she starred alongside Will Ferrell, 500 Days of Summer with Joseph Gordon-Levitt OR as the spunky girl from Weeds.

Either way, there's a lot of cool things about her and you should know 'em.

1. In the first season of New Girl, Zooey and Jake Johnson had to have as little human contact as possible because their chemistry was too strong.

Seriously though...

2. She had to sew her own clothes in high school because she had a TINY allowance and wasn't allowed to go to the mall until she was 17.

She was a GIANT theater nerd so she constantly needed new clothes. 

3. She sang all of her songs in Elf But also on most of her movie soundtracks.

Her real voice is on the soundtracks of Once Upon a Mattress, Yes Man, 500 Days of Summer, Winnie the Pooh, Your Highness, Sweetheart

and The Go-Getter.

4. She got pissed and called out The New York Times after it said that Zooey was a recognizable type because of "her deadpan, sardonic and scene-stealing performances."

Zooey HATED being typecast saying: "A lot of these roles are just a formula idea of somebody's best friend, and it's like, I don't even have that many friends. In high school, I stayed home all the time, so I don't know how I'm everybody's best friend now."

5. Not only can she belt out a tune but she can play the piano, guitar, and the baritone ukulele like a BOSSSS.

She showed a bit of that during her duet with 500 Days Of Summer co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

6. Even though her New Girlcharacter loves getting trashed, Zooey DOESN'T drink, smoke OR do drugs.

If you meet her in person THIS is why she might not be able to keep focus or maintain eye contact with you...

7. In May 2011, Zooey launched HelloGiggles, an entertainment website that targets female audiences, alongside producer Sophia Rossi and writer Molly McAleer.

The site describes itself as "a positive online community for women (although men are always welcome!) covering the latest in culture, female empowerment, style, relationships, friendship, careers, and issues that matter most to young women’s lives."

8. She beat Amanda Bynes for the role of Jess in New Girl.

I mean, nothing against Ms. Bynes but Zooey was BORN for this role!

9. She suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and takes medication to reduce the symptoms.

The symptoms include difficulty keeping focus including maintaining eye contact, being disorganized, fidgeting, being impulsive and being socially intrusive.

And finally...

10. In a Californian prep school, she became tight with future superstars Jake Gyllenhaal and Kate Hudson!

Their old stomping grounds were at the Crossroads preparatory school in Santa Monica, California.

11. Her older sister, Emily Deschanel, plays the lead character in the FOX drama series, Bones.

Guess the acting bug runs in the family. Her father is a cinematographer and her mother is an actress too.

12. And finally, she's got money in the bank – her net worth is $15 million.
