11 Insider Facts About 'Chappelle's Show', The Best Comedy Show Ever Created

SHARE

Dave Chappelle is one the GREATEST comedians on Earth. He didn't care who you were, he'd make fun.

But if you're looking for him to be on TV putting out new stuff, you'd be outta luck – his AMAZEBALLS show, Chappelle's Show, went off the air in 2006.

SInce then we haven't seen any new sketches that SLAYED pop culture like Rick James, or the Black White supremacists, The Real World if it all black people or Sam Jackson's Beer!

But there is a bunch of stuff you probably missed like....

1. The Charlie Murphy sketch where he lost to Prince at basketball was REAL.

The only thing that wasn't was Prince MAKING pancakes. They just ate them...

2. Dave and his writing partner Neal Brennan learned how to write sketches from a SNL guidebook.

They read Live From New York: The Complete, Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live as Told by Its Stars, Writers, and Guests. Brennan found the book to be “really informative and really helpful.”

3. Wayne Brady didn't like what was said about him in a sketch so he got to get his revenge on Dave in a darker sketch.

He was a fan and saw a sketch of Paul Mooney playing Negrodamus who said,“White people love Wayne Brady, because Wayne Brady makes Bryant Gumbel look like Malcolm X" and got ANGRY. Brady bought the crew drinks at the NAACP awards and told off Chappelle. The next day they made up a sketch that showed off Brady's gangsta side.

4. HBO hated it.

“We pitched to HBO and they looked at us like we were lepers,” Brennan recalled.

5. Chappelle wasn't supposed to be Samuel L. Jackson in the Sam Jackson beer sketch.

"We cast people, they'd do it, and we knew that wasn't how it needed to be done," Brennan said. "Dave knew how he wanted it so he just would do it. Instead of counting on someone else to capture our imagination, we just did it ourselves."

IT'S MY BEER!!

6. Hugh Hefner inspired Chappelle to make the show.

Chappelle watched a Playboy special where musicians and comedians performed for Hef and the bunnies. He called his writing partner for Half Baked and “we started talking about variety shows, we wanted to do something that was real personal."

7. Bobby Brown was supposed to be the STD-Sesame Street-esque sketch but he got arrested and had to be replaced.

That's why Snoop Dogg and Q-Tip are in the Kneehigh Park sketch. PS those are different STDs dancing at the bottom...

It was STILL hilarious!

8. Lil' Jon admits that the show launched him into popularity. WHAAAAT? WHAT? WHAT?

"This Dave Chappelle sh** just really put me on a different level," Lil Jon told MTV. "He basically has thrusted me into pop culture, and not just urban but white society as well. I was in the airport like three weeks ago, this 60-year-old white lady came up to me and was like, 'Aren’t you Lil Jon? … Don’t you do that 'Whuuuut? Yeeeaaah! Okaaayyy!' That’s you, right?’”

9. After the show popularized Chappelle's Rick James saying"b—ch" after everything, a politician in Mississippi had many of his campaign signs vandalized and stolen.

Politician Rick James ran city council in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in 2005 and said he found some of his signs 100 miles away.

F—K YOUR COUCH!

10. Eddie Murphy watched the Rick James sketch in complete silence and didn't laugh...

BUT once it was over, he said it was "genius" and told his brother Charlie Murphy to play it again.

11. The reason he left the show was because people kept yelling out "I’m Rick James, b–ch" at stand up shows and ruining his flow.

In the middle of a taping he left because the pressure got to him, he flew to South Africa and walked away from a $50 million contract. "I felt in a lot of instances I was deliberately being put through stress because when you’re a guy who generates money, people have a vested interest in controlling you."

Annnnnnnnd now I'm going to yell a catch phrase at a random stranger...
