10 Fascinating Diseases They Didn't Teach In Health Class

SHARE
Remember health class? Honestly, I don't really. When you have your gym teacher spend one hour a month "teaching" the finer points of health, a few things slip through the cracks.

Plus, no matter how hard they try, getting 30 teenage boys to take putting a condom on a banana seriously just isn't likely to turn out great. This is why they make us run laps and take cold showers anyway, isn't it?

Anyway, back to the point. Health class could have used a few tweaks, but at the same time, we have the ability to Google. Not to mention the fine folks of the reddit community, who have no problem asking the tough questions. So today, we bring you some of the most fascinating diseases redditors have heard of, and needless to say, some are pretty crazy. Others, completely terrifying.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go schedule a doctor's appointment because not even WebMD has given me some of these diagnoses. Please keep in mind that most of these diseases are extremely rare, so don't stress out too much.

Feel free to add to the list by COMMENTINGwith some of your lesser known diseases! Knowledge is power, after all.

1. Syndrome X

This was the term given to Brooke Greenberg's disease, which essentially saw her unable to age. She lived for 20 years but weighed only 13 pounds, and her mental capacity was diagnosed as never reaching more than that of a one-year-old.

What's even more fascinating was that different parts of her body were growing at different rates. She still had her baby teeth, and her bones were like that of a 10-year-old.

2. Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis

So imagine you can't really feel anything. So heat, cold, pain, all of that is just out the window. You can't even feel the sensation that you might need to go pee, and sweating is basically not an option because your body doesn't sense that it's overheating. Sounds terrifying.

3. The Case Of Nicky Freeman

Nicky has all the physical attributes of a 10-year-old, but in fact he is 40. He ages one year for every four, and doctors would have never guessed he would live this long.

He was born one month overdue, with liquid on his brain and a larger-than-normal head. Nicky is blind, at one point could not cope with loud noises, and stopped talking altogether at a very young age. Despite all this, he is very efficient with body language.

4. Body Integrity Identity Disorder

Essentially, this describes someone seemingly healthy whose idea of their body doesn't match their actual body. Often, people have the desire to amputate one or more healthy limbs. However, it's not solely associated with amputation, as one woman went so far as to intentionally blind herself.

5. Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva

Imagine your body's tissue turnedto bone. That's essentially what happens in this disease as tissue like tendons and ligaments form bone outside your skeleton. In many cases, people's joints can become permanently frozen.

6. Phantom Limb

This one kind of explains itself, but basicallyyou get the feeling that your limb is still there, even when it's been removed by amputation or through other means. The worst part is that not only do you get the feeling that it's still there, but it's also a painful experience, which just adds insult to injury.

7. Capgras Delusion

We all know how over the top our imaginations can get, but when you think everyone close to you is an impostor, that can get really frightening. It's typically associated with patients suffering from brain injuries or dementia.

8. Alien Hand Syndrome

This one has been mimicked in movies and TV, but it's actually totally creepy. So one of your hands pretty much acts independentlyall on its own, which can often be very dangerous.

9. Fatal Familial Insomnia

If you already have trouble sleeping, this will probably freak you out. Basically your sleeping gets progressively worse, and patients typically die within a few months to a few years of being diagnosed as they suffer from hallucinations and delirium.

10. Myostatin-Related Muscle Hypertrophy

Pretty much a body builder's dream. Basicallyyou have reduced fat and a increased muscle size. So you're big and strong, and there are no real known medical problems associated with the disease.
