The Biggest Supermoon In 70 Years Is Set To Fill The Sky

SHARE
I don't know about you, but I love going out at night when an eclipse or supermoon is visible. These rare events are fascinating and quite stunning, to say the least. NASA has announced that on November 14th, the largest supermoon in nearly 70 years will be visible. In fact, this supermoon will be so big that NASA has even nicknamed it the "extra-supermoon."

Let me explain why this supermoon is such a big deal.

Supermoons have been coveted sightings for good reason. Here is one spotted in the past over the mountainous terrain of Alaska.

Most of us have been alive for a "typical" supermoon, but most us of haven't been around for what NASA is calling the "extra-supermoon."

Hold up, it's actually a huge deal.

Not only will it be a full moon, the moon will appear roughly 14% bigger and 30% brighter than the typical full moon.

Also, if you don't catch this extra-supermoon, you won't be able to see another one like it until November 2034.

I know, right? The reason why this one is so big is actually pretty interesting...

A supermoon takes place when the moon reaches the point in orbit where it is closest to the Earth.

When the moon, sun, and Earth align with the Earth in between the moon and sun, a supermoon is born. In fact, the orbit is roughly 30,000 miles closer to the Earth's surface, explaining why the moon appears so much larger.

This causes the moon to appear brighter and larger than usual, and this year is special.

The reason this supermoon is so special is because the moon will actually become full very close to the time that it will reach its closest positioning with Earth.

Now is it clear how cool this event is?

Great, I'm glad you understand.

So don't miss your chance to see this rare supermoon. Be sure to find a really dark place at night with little or no city light to give yourself the best chance at seeing it.

Plus, it'll make for a pretty cool Instagram selfie shot!

COMMENT on Facebook letting us know if you've ever had the chance to see a supermoon in person.
