Ruby Rose Reveals Why She Didn't Get Gender Reassignment Surgery

Ruby Rose instantly became a household name after her appearance on Orange is the New Black. Suddenly, everybody wanted to know everything about her! Was the beautiful Australian accent real? Does she really have those tattoos? Is her wink the best gif to appear on the internet? The answer to all those questions is yes. Over the years, Ruby has been opening up about her sexuality, how she views and identifies herself, and how she feels about being a role model in the LGBTQ+ community. 

She recently revealed that she had originally wanted to get gender reassignment surgery! Keep reading to find out her reason why she wanted it and why she refused it in the end.

Ruby Rose has been busy promoting her new movie xXx: The Return of Xander Cage.

Ruby was already known around the world as an actor, but this movie is going to solidify her status as an action star.

In an interview for The Edit, Ruby opened up about fame and relationships.

But she also revealed something pretty shocking — she originally had plans to have gender reassignment surgery! Find out what she had to say. 

Back in 2015, Ruby said that she considered gender reassignment surgery when she was younger. 

"I had this jar that I would collect dollars — in fact, we were so poor, it would have been cents. So I probably had 19 cents to go towards this surgery that I didn’t really know a lot about. I think I had seen like a daytime documentary, probably something on Oprah and I was like, 'That’s what I’m going to do.'"

She said she started saving for the surgery when she was five years old!

Ruby says that she didn't go through with it because she became more comfortable with her own body and was happy to change her hair and the clothes she wore instead of transitioning. 

“When I got to 15 was when I kind of decided to get more into my body, and I shaved my head, and my mom was just like, 'I don’t know what’s going on right now, but if you are happy, then do it.'" 

"And I decided to change the way that I dressed and talked and realized that I didn’t want to transition, I just wanted to be more comfortable in my own skin.”

Ruby also mentioned that she's glad she didn't get the surgery because she wants to be a mother one day!

“I’m a woman … I want to have babies one day, so I’m glad I didn’t make changes earlier in my life." 

Ruby, who came out as lesbian and now identifies as gender fluid, also talked about growing up and only hanging out with the boys. "All I wanted was a boy's name growing up — Charlie, Billie, Max, Frankie. You just know my mum wanted a girly girl princess!"

She's happy with who she is and now she's focused on being a good role model for LGBTQ+ youth. “I want to be the person I wished was around when I was growing up."
