The Biggest Loser is definitely a unique way to provide help with weight loss.

They have professional staff on hand, dieticians, and make sure to keep contestants committed.

It's incredible what a difference having someone to keep you on track can make.

It's a lot harder to lose motivation when you have trainers, and a reality TV show, to keep you going.

And the results are often jaw-dropping!

It's incredible what these people can accomplish in their time on the show – and inspiring.

But the results might not be as magical as they seem.

There are some interesting observations being revealed about the show.

Not everything is as it first appears with The Biggest Loser...

There is new research arising about the long term effects of the intense weight loss of the show.

It seems that rapidly losing weight like they do isn't exactly perfect in the long term.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases decided to look at the Season 8 contestants 6 years after the show.

And what they found was very intriguing. They noticed that many of the contestants had gained back much of the weight they lost.

What the research found was that their bodies actually fought to gain the weight back.

And this was because of two things: lower levels of leptin, a hormone controlling hunger, and a damaged resting metabolism.

The rapid changes in their bodies caused it to be impossible to eat so little as to maintain the new weight.

They burned fewer calories, and had increased hunger, leading to a slow crawl back up the scale.

The biggest problem was that over the years, their resting metabolism didn't recover.

Before the contest, they all had normal metabolism levels, but in the years following the show, they still had a reduced rate for people of their age and weight.

Now, this isn't to say that losing weight damages your metabolism, because that isn't true.

Many of the contestants were able to keep the weight off, and only a small number have exceeded their starting weight.

The most important lesson to take away from this is that things should be done at a healthy pace.

Losing weight shouldn't be a race, and rapid loss usually only comes from water weight, which quickly returns.

Healthy, lasting weight loss comes from hard work, dedication, and patience.

And most importantly, anyone can do it!
