15 Things Most People Don't Know About 'Mrs. Doubtfire'

SHARE
Film critics and movie buffs are always fighting about what movies are good, bad, worthy and just total and complete crap. As a fellow movie-lover, I have a hard time listening to the constant debates revolving around films like Citizen Kane or Gone With The Wind when it should be obvious that the greatest film EVER made (and the only film worth talking about) is CLEARLY the 1993 comedic classic Mrs. Doubtfire. It had everything! Robin Williams in drag, one of the Lawrence brothers and even a scene where boobs catch on fire. See? EVERYTHING! Well believe it or not, there are a lot of things you probably didn't know about the film. Check these shocking facts out.

1. Robin Williams' makeup took FOREVER.

Well not forever, but about four and a half hours every single day of filming. Yikes!

2. The girl who played the oldest daughter was kicked out of school.

Apparently Lisa Jakub's school wasn't happy about her missing 5 months to play the part of Lydia in the film. Robin Williams even wrote them a personal letter asking them to reconsider. She didn't get back in, but that photo is now framed in the school...

3. There were always three cameras on Robin Williams at all times.

Why? Because the guy would just go off into improvised tangents and the filmmaker wanted to make sure he didn't miss ANYTHING.

4. Blake Lively was almost in the film.

She auditioned for the role of the youngest daughter, but lost the role to Mara Wilson.

Trust me, we haven't even scratched the surface yet...

5. Robin Williams fans paid their respects by visiting the house where Mrs. Doubtfire was filmed.

Just hours after the tragic loss was announced, dozens of fans showed up the San Francisco house to pay their respects.

6. Robin Williams says the word "dear" over 100 times throughout the film.

Seriously, if you played the Mrs. Doubtfiredrinking game you'd be wasted.

7. Tim Allen was almost Mrs. Doubtfire.

That's right, the tool man turned down the part.

8. The scene where the cream keeps dripping off of Mrs. Doubtfire's face was completely improvised.

Apparently the lights were extremely hot and caused the cream to keep dripping off of Williams' face. Rather than cutting, the filmmakers took advantage of it.

9. Remember when Sally Fields gives her address to Mrs. Doubtfire on the phone?

She tells her to come to 2640 Steiner St. Well that's the ACTUAL address of where the film was shot!

10. Robin Williams underwent some crazy tests to see if people would recognize him.

While dressed as Mrs. Doubtfire, Williams even visited a sex shop without being noticed!

11. The plot of the film hit close to home for Sally Fields and Robin Williams.

While filming, Fields was actually going through a divorce and Williams left his wife to be with his nanny. Weird...

12. Robin Williams often referenced his other films in the movie.

Remember when his teeth fall into the wine glass? Mrs. Doubtfire can be heard uttering “Carpe Dentum... seize the teeth.” Any film-lover knows this is a direct reference to his "Carpe Diem...seize the day" line from Dead Poet's Society.

13. The film is actually based off of a British novel.

British author Anne Fine used to walk by an old fur and jewelry store that was owned by a Madame Doubtfire. The rest is history.

14. The film was also Mara Wilson's acting debut.

She would later go on to play the lead role in Matilda.

15. The film cost $25 million to make... but made nearly $440 million at the box office.
