12 Bizarre Facts About The Olympics Throughout History

SHARE

If you've been living under a rock, the Summer Olympic Games are just around the corner in Rio, Brazil.

The games are expected to be amazing despite some of the problems the country has been facing, including the water in the city filled with garbage, a shrinking economy and even the President being forced to step down. But this isn't the only time that weird stuff has happened in and around the Olympics throughout history. And some are pretty damn bizarre.

COMMENT and tell us what you think of these facts!

1.The Tunisian Olympic Pentathlete team in Rome 1960 was arguably the worst in history – one nearly drowned and they had one fencer pretend to be an entire team.

Three contestants fell off their horses and fired guns near the judges and were removed from the competition. One of them nearly drowned swimming in one of the races. One fencer pretended to be an entire team by not removing his mask. He was discovered and disqualified.

2. West Germany's Hans-Jurgen Todt started slapping his horse when it refused to make three jumps at the 1968 Mexico Games pentathlon.

His team mates had to restrain him and he was kicked out of the medal competition. Pictured: the horse's reaction.

3. George Eyser, a gymnastfrom Germany, won 6 medals (3 Gold, 2 silvers and a bronze) in ONE day in 1904 Olympics – despite having a wooden leg.

He lost his real one when it was run over by – get this – a train.

4. Cuban martial artist Angel Valodia Matos shoved the ref out of the way and kicked Swedish judge Chakir Chelbat in the head after he was disqualified from the taekwondo men's +80-kg bronze medal.

The judges said he took too long during a timeout while waiting for medical attention so he had to be disqualified from his bronze medal. The judges argue he couldn't keep fighting with a broken toe.

But we're just getting started, including one dude who cheated using a car during a competition...

5. American Fred Lorz was disqualified after winning his 1904 Marathon because it was revealed he hitched a ride for most of the race before returning back to the race...

Basically this:

6. Johnny Weismuller won five swimming medals in 1924 and 1928. And then starred in 12 movies as Tarzan...

In fact, he used his iconic yell to scare aware Cuban rebels who tied to kidnap him during a round of golf on the island in 1958.

7. In the 1900 Olympic Games, the skeet shooting was done with REAL BIRDS. 300 birds died that day...

21 of them by winner Leon de Lunden of Belgium.

8. Bad weather meant the last two events in the London 1948 London Olympics had to be held at night and lit up by car headlights...

Just replace the woman and cat with a bunch of Olympic athletes!!

And every Olympic games there is a massive supply of condoms order since...

9.  Olympic organizers gave out 70,000 condoms to athletes in the Olympic village in 2000 and the athletes used them all...

140,000 were used four years later. PS there were 100,000 free condoms at Beijing 2008, 150,000 handed out at London 2012.

10. JJ Hayes, winner of the massive 1908 London Marathon didn't want to walk the lap of honor so he was carried around the stadium on a table...

Basically this.

11. Because of segregation in the USA in 1936, returning Olympian Jesse Owens had to travel in a Waldorf-Astoria goods lift to make it to the official reception for his OWN parade in his honor.

Ugh...

12. And finally, steeplechasers at the 1932 Games had to run an extra lap on top of their normal distance because ONE official lost count of the number of laps...

SERIOUSLY, DUDE?
