Man Born Female Gives Birth To Baby Fathered By Woman Born Male

Last year, Fernando and Diane made news around the world when the couple revealed they were expecting. This June, their baby (whom they've affectionately nicknamed "Caraote" — the snail) was born.

It wasn't your typical pregnancy, per se, because Fernando was actually the one carrying the baby.

Meet Fernando.

Fernando Machado was born Maria in Ecuador, where being transgender is not easy. Though he hasn't undergone gender reassignment surgery, he is living life as himself, rather than as a woman.

Meet Diane.

Diane Rodriguez was previously Luis, and never thought that motherhood would be in the cards for her. "Being a mother was never something I thought I would do because I am a transsexual... The law before demanded that to be recognized as a woman you had to be castrated."

Diane works as an LGBT activist and has been very vocal about transgender rights. She was the first transgender candidate in Ecuador to run for Congress.

Meet their Caraote.

In an interview for BBC, Fernando said of realizing they'd have a baby, "I started crying with happiness, fear, and dread, all at once. It was the most beautiful moment."

In many ways, they're no different than any other family. "We live as man and woman. I’m a transfeminine woman and Fernando is a transmasculine man,” Diane told interviewers. "The process to get here was complex for each of us. Knowing it’s our right, we decided to add another member to our family."

Fernando and Diane met in 2013 after connecting on Facebook.

Their Facebook profiles date their marriage as August 9, 2015. By December of that year, they were already making headlines with their pregnancy announcement.

The couple kept up with social media throughout their pregnancy.

And they're still going strong (despite probably being exhausted)! Their photos range from the positive pregnancy test to sonogram and ultrasound photos and include some really sweet maternity photos. Recently, Fernando has posted a picture of his C-section scar (which is actually smaller than I thought C-section scars would be) to keep open communication on what they've been through to get to where they are.

This is a total game changer for transgender couples all over the world.

And more little game changers are in the plans! Fernando and Diane have made no secret of the fact that they'd like to have more children.

Since Caraote was born in June, Fernando and Diane have started an awareness campaign for LGBTQ families and their rights.

Which means that these busy new parents have even more on their plate! Diane has stated on her fan page, "Our son is the revolution of love," as she thanked followers for their well-wishes and love.

The proud dad has been posting to Facebook.

Fernando updated followers on the newest baby update — their four-month-old Caraote is babbling. Even better, though, he's said "Papa."

Congratulations to the parents!

On being true to themselves, on finding each other, on fighting for the rights of others, and on their beautiful blessing the "promoter of love!"
