13 Weird Things About 'Scrubs' That Are Kinda Nuts

SHARE

Scrubs was one the funniest shows on TV once upon a time.

And honestly, it could be both funny AND hit you right in the emotional gut. Like, you'd be laughing your ass off one minute, but the next you'd be bawling your eyes raw.

From J.D.'s constant daydreaming, Turk's over-the-top antics, Dr. Cox's rapid-fire monologues or the weird Janitor, this show had EVERYTHING. But there was a bunch of stuff that you missed (I know I did...).

1. Everything was filmed in a real, abandoned hospital, and people would come on set looking for medical advice.

The writers' room was the actual North Hollywood Medical Center's former psychiatric ward.

2. Actor Neil Flynn's ad-libbing was so rampant as the Janitor that, at some point, a fourth season script just said: “Whatever Neil says.”

PS The Janitor actually was originally written as a gag character for the first episode, but they loved the character too much and kept him for the whole series.

3. The stunt doubles for J.D. and Elliot got married!

This scene was the day they met and started... falling in love.

5. Weird Ted's A Cappella group, The Worthless Peons, are are legit A Capella band together.

They call themselves The Blanks and do sketch comedy too!

6. Judy Reyes, who played Carla, actually did a tango dance number with a FRACTURED pelvis...

Seriously. She'd undergone surgery and did the TANGO right after!

Carla as "Lupita" is all I can think about when she dancing.

7. The cast had an escalating series of dares while filming — pigs feet and burlesque dresses were involved...

Creator Bill Lawrence said that it started as a bonding thing and started with them seeing a jar of big's feet in a bar and daring each other to eat it. Another time Sarah Chalke was dared to order coffee in a burlesque outfit.
8. Real doctors served as consultants to make sure all the medical junk was LEGIT.

They'd even pitch medical situations and when they'd make the script and the doctors names always made it in the show.

9. Both women AND men had equal opportunities to be in sexually RISQUÉ scenes...AKA reason for The Todd's banana hammocks.

"One of the things I swore to the female actors on the show was 'You guys will have to be in skimpy lingerie and doing sexy shit, but I promise you for every time one of you guys is like that one of the male characters will be like that,'" said creator Bill Lawrence.

This is the real Dr. Jon Turk with the actor who played him and Dr. John Dorian, AKA J.D.

10. John C. McGinley, AKA Dr. Cox, would berate J.D. using girl names (Alice,Marcia, Janice, Toto, Nancy or Ginger), because that's how he makes fun of his friend John Cusack.

11. Phill Lewis, who played Hooch, actually is crazy.... he killed a woman while drunk-driving.

Lewis was convicted of manslaughter in 1991 and even served some prison time.

12. The real reason J.D. and Turk got a new stuffed dog was because a fired crew member stole and hid the first dog in the ceiling...

"It's not really easy to find dead, stuffed golden retrievers," Lawrence said in a Paley Center interview.

13. And finally, the cast went skinny-dipping for Donald Faison, AKA Turk,'s birthday.

They went to the Bahamas and swam into the ocean and the lighting storm in the distance was so beautiful, they both disrobed and swam nude in the water. Braff said it was “just like J.D. and Turk would.”
