Human Remains Found By Divers In Famous 2,000-Year-Old Shipwreck

Human Remains Found By Divers In Famous 2,000-Year-Old Shipwreck

There's something incredibly creepy yet fascinating about an old shipwreck. Think about when the Titanic was finally found. People were chomping at the bit to see pictures from the inside so many decades after its tragic sinking.

Another shipwreck is getting some major attention online for the insights it may provide into Roman-era history as well as genetic science. The Antikythera wreck, which is thought to have occurred sometime around 65 BCE, has provided archaeologists with a ton of interesting artifacts since its discovery in 1900 in the Aegean Sea. Divers just found something else at the site, though — a remarkably preserved human body.

SHARE this fascinating find with your friends on Facebook. This is huge!

The Antikythera wreck is one of the most famous shipwrecks in human history, and it occurred just off the coast of the island with the same name.

In 1900, divers discovered the remains of the Roman-era ship that some believe was a cargo or grain-carrying ship.

Since the original find, archaeologists have recovered a plethora of artifacts.

These artifacts have included statues, pottery, and art that have helped characterize life during that time period.

The most notable discovery was a device known now as the Antikythera mechanism.

This original "analog computer" was a sophisticated device that was used to predict astronomical phenomena. The gear-based machine has been the subject of extensive analysis ever since.

When divers returned to the site again this summer, they made quite the discovery...

Human remains were uncovered at the site that have been untouched for 2,000 years.

Divers from the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) made the historic discovery.

The remains are thought to be a sailor from the original voyage. After such an extensive amount of time underwater, bodies are usually pushed away by currents or completely destroyed by fish, which makes this discovery an incredibly rare find.

This photograph shows a piece of skull and jaw with three teeth.

In addition to the piece of skull and teeth, bones from the ribs, legs, and arms were found.

One of the most interesting parts about the find is that this is the first time human remains have been recovered in a shipwreck since DNA analysis has been available.

The potential application of 2,000-year-old DNA is hard to state...

Experts in the field of ancient genetics are extremely excited about the potential information that can be gleaned from future DNA analysis of the bones.

A DNA expert from the Natural History Museum in Copenhagen, Dr. Hannes Schroeder, said that "against all odds, the bones survived over 2,000 years at the bottom of the sea and they appear to be in fairly good condition, which is incredible."

Basically, the analysis will paint a very detailed picture of who this sailor, or even slave, was.

Researchers should be able to determine the ethnicity and general geographic origins of the sailor.

DNA analysis may even be able to uncover the state of the person's health as well as where they came from. Currently scientists believe that the individual was in their mid-twenties, given the way the fissures in the skull were organized.

Another unanswered question is whether the crew was Greek or Roman. If the origins of the bones are determined, a huge hole in the mystery that is the Antikythera wreck will finally be filled.

Here is a video from Nature showing some of the expedition that led to the discovery.

This video is absolutely incredible!SHARE this exciting article with your friends on Facebook. They may not know how big of a deal this really is.

Let's Just All Agree Coffee Is Life

Let's Just All Agree Coffee Is Life

For all things considered, I am totallyuseless as a human being until I've had a cup of coffee. How do people function without coffee, anyway? People go their entire lives without drinking it and I can't go an hour without the stuff — but their loss in the end. Coffee is life, cold brew is love, and latte art is my love language, and anyone who thinks otherwise is someone I don't need in my life.

Yours too? No way!

Who cares what my actual birthstone is? Coffee beans are the only ones that matter to me and I would like them implemented in my life as much as possible.

Maybelline? Not a chance.

Concealer does work some serious magic, but even the best, most impressive and expensive makeup in the world has nothing on coffee.

MY MANTRA!

Wish I could eliminate stress from the equation, but I mean, it's fine. As long as I have coffee I am blessed and that is all that really matters to me.

Conquering the world one cup at a time.

Nothing could ever make me feel more powerful than being fully caffeinated. Messy bun, nice denim, cute outfit, coffee in hand, I am unstoppable, world: HERE I COME!

Simple, isn't it?

Coffee might be my soulmate, and I have accepted that. Someone who dates me has to supply with me with it at all times as part of the relationship agreement.

Addiction is a strong word that I don't want to use.

I could stop anytime I want to, but the fact of the matter is that I don't want to stop, so I won't. Coffee and I are veryhappy together, okay? Let us live.

Sooooo if you will excuse me, I'm gonna go and get another cold brew. Yes, it is my third cup today. Yes, it is only noon. Leave me alone.

Charlie Sheen? The irony is too much.

2. Matthew McConaughey said "Alright, alright, alright" to rehab after the police came to his house and found drugs everywhere. Matthew was also caught playing bongos while naked.

Somehow, that just seems like a very McConaughey thing to do. His agent told him to go to rehab or else he'd start losing movie roles!

3. Jon Hamm spent 30 days in rehab for alcohol addiction. Jon said that he was overwhelmed with the success of Mad Men and that's what led to the heavy drinking.

But it looks like he's all happy and healthy now!

4. Drew Barrymore went to rehab twice when she was a teen. The first time was when she was 13 and she went for substance abuse. Drew said it was too much to have fame at such a young age.

Drew said she had her first drink at 9, began smoking marijuana at 10 and took up cocaine at 12. That's rough! But she pulled it together and has gone on to do so many amazing movies.

5. Matthew Perry went to rehab multiple times! He went to rehab in 1997 for a Vicodin addiction. He said there are three years of filming Friends that he doesn't remember at all.

He also went to rehab in 2001 for an addiction to opioids, amphetamines and alcohol. Whoa, no wonder he doesn't remember filming or anything going on in his life at the time!

8. Mary-Kate Olsen was the twin that decided to check into rehab to treat an eating disorder. She developed the disorder after she panicked about her career and realized she didn't want to act.

And look at her now! She graduated from NYU and runs a successful fashion line with Ashley!

Demi never confirmed anything but her second rehab stint happened right after her breakup with Ashton Kutcher. It must have been rough for her!

10. Everyone thought Kirsten Dunst checked into rehab because she was partying too hard. She later told a magazine that she really needed help for her depression.

I'm glad she's okay! Now it's time to rewatch Season 2 of Fargo because Kirsten is flawless in that.

11. Gerard Butler got seriously injured during a surfing accident and was abusing his pain meds. He was so nervous about overdosing that he took action and checked himself into rehab!

And then he quickly recovered and became the action movie star that we all love.

12. Before she became the luckiest woman alive for being with Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes checked into a rehab facility in 2008 for substance abuse.

She never denied or confirmed the rumors about her addiction but the records don't lie! She definitely went to rehab... we'll just never know for what!

13. Shia LaBeouf was kicked off the Transformers franchise because he was in rehab for substance abuse and to address his anger issues.

Rehab worked for him and maybe that's where he got the idea for his "Just Do It" video! Honestly, that video is so inspiring. That video is the greatest legacy for Shia to leave behind.

14. Even McSteamy needed help! Eric Dane checked into a rehab center to treat his addiction to painkillers. Apparently, he developed the addiction when he was healing from a back injury!

And now I'm thinking about how much I miss Eric on Grey's Anatomy. RIP McSteamy.

Aw! Famous brothers helping each other out. Now is Aaron going to release new music? Let's get his comeback going!

Good on these celebs for seeking help! COMMENT and tell us why you think so many celebs end up in rehab!

The human body is a miraculous machine, but it's not as finely engineered as you might think. In fact, from an engineering standpoint, it's kind of a mess. A good engineer eliminates anything useless or unnecessary to the design. But our bodies have things like the appendix — a wholly pointless organ that, in a best-case scenario, will simply go on being pointless rather than getting infected and trying to kill us.

You have to wonder, why would our bodies have these odd, ill-conceived imperfections?

The answer, of course, is history. The human body is both a machine and a laboratory, undergoing constant, incremental change from generation to generation in a grand genetic experiment. The results of that grand experiment are written on our faces and hidden under our skin. And even the hidden stuff shows up from time to time — in those odd imperfections, like the way a tendon sticks out from your wrist. Our ancestors are always with us, and you can see pieces of them if you know where to look.

It's not always kind — as the shine off my male pattern baldness can attest — but it's wonderfully human.

SHARE this on Facebook to show your friends how weird the human body can be.

Researchers Believe A Chemical In Marijuana Could Help Treat
Alzheimer's Disease

Researchers Believe A Chemical In Marijuana Could Help Treat Alzheimer's Disease

Few diseases cause more anxiety than Alzheimer's. It's a heartbreaking disease – the kind that we'd enlist just about any weapon to fight. And, thanks to the dedicated work of researchers, it looks like an unexpected weapon might show incredible promise for a breakthrough. Here's hoping it makes good on its promise.

Researchers studying the progression of Alzheimer's disease had a happy accident when experimenting with the protein that causes Alzheimer's symptoms to appear.

As expected, the amyloid beta protein started inflammation in cell cultures, causing a series of reactions, including the production of a couple of chemicals that indicate to cells that they should self-destruct. Of course, those cells destroying themselves would lead to mental decline.

However, a surprise showed up among those chemicals produced – a substance called arachidonic acid.

It's also associated with cell death. While the researchers could have merely included it as part of the Alzheimer's progression, they chose to look into it further. Arachidonic acid happens to be cannabinoid, a cousin of THC. Where arachidonic acid produces inflammation, however, THC reduces stress.

So the researchers thought, hey, what if we add some THC to the cell cultures while the amyloid beta protein was building up.

They figured the THC would reverse the process, preventing inflammation and cell death. They were right. In fact, THC was the only cannabinoid to do so, and it even reduced the amount of amyloid beta in the cells. The cells could heal themselves. Talk about a remarkable result.

Although this is a promising development, there are a couple of important caveats. First, this experiment was only on cell cultures. What would actually happen inside the body is unproven.

Also, the researchers aren't sure how the THC actually achieved the results it did. So it's amazingly promising, but it's only a first step.

17 Historical Photos That Show A Completely Different Way Of Life

17 Historical Photos That Show A Completely Different Way Of Life

History is notoriously one-sided. We see the same pictures, hear the same stories time after time. It's gotten to the point where we romanticize the past and criticize the present without realizing how great we have it.

Even just 100 years ago, child labor in North America was completely legal and common. And don't forget that even if you were well off, day to day life was a struggle without electricity! There were also the beautiful parts — the cultures that we've lost through the years, and the sense of community that comes from truly depending on each other.

These pictures give us a glimpse into the past that we may have forgotten, or never even seen!

Be sure to SHARE these amazing pictures with your friends and family!
