For years, hotels have avoided the "unlucky" number 13.
Many hotels and motels don't assign the number 13 to any room. Multi-storey buildings take this a step further and have no "official" 13th floor, going straight from the 12th to the 14th.
Something similar exists in China.
The number 4 is considered unlucky in China, so many elevators display alternative markings rather than showing the unlucky digit.
Despite this, times are changing.
While many hotels still avoid using the number 13, plenty have decided that it's silly to avoid a number based on superstition.
But there's a new number to be avoided.
That number is 420. It's an issue that's popped up more recently than the number 13 situation. Why? Read on!
The number 420 is pretty heavily associated with pot smoking.
The reasons why are unclear, but over the decades the number has become shorthand for pot smoking.
Hotels noticed an uptick in questionable behavior associated with room 420.
This ranges from signs getting stolen to some pretty *ahem* smoky parties being held inside the rooms.
So to avoid the issue, many western hotels have stopped assigning 420 as a room number.
Much like the number 13, hotels are moving toward skipping room number 420 - going from 419 straight to 421.
The move is the simplest way for hotels to avoid unwanted hassle.
With the legalization movement in full swing, hotels are dealing with more and more pot tourists.
