China Is Now Home To The World's Highest Bridge — And It's Terrifying

If you're afraid of heights, the Beipanjiang Bridge is not the commute for you. On December 29, 2016, the bridge officially opened to traffic and gained the record of the World's Highest Bridge. However, it has not surpassed the record holder of the World's Tallest Bridge, which is still held by France's Millau viaduct. Spanning the River Tarn, the viaduct stands 1,125 feet tall, whereas the Beipanjiang's tallest point is only 882.5 feet tall. It's hard for China to complain, though, for they currently have eight of the ten highest bridges in the world.

The Beipanjiang stretches 1,854 feet above the Beipan River.

That number just boggles my mind.

It was built to connect the provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou. 

The commute time between the two provinces has now been reduced from four hours to one. So maybe the scary drive is worth it!

It took three years to build the bridge and cost approximately $140 million dollars.

While it won't be beaten for a while, the Beipanjiang will soon be joined by what will become the second highest bridge in the world: the Jinshajiang Bridge Taku will be completed in 2021. 

Just don't look down!
