17 Interesting Things To Know About Tim Burton

It's kind of ridiculous but if you think about it, some of the biggest and most beloved movies ever are made by Tim Burton! Just think about it. He's directed Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland and so many more! He's the mastermind behind creating these dark, creepy and spooky movies with characters you can't help but love. So who exactly is Tim Burton? And how does he come up with all these amazing ideas for movies? Keep reading to find out more about the mysterious director!

1. Tim's known for being a director but he started off studying character animation in university!

2. His degree was worth it because he landed an animator's apprenticeship with Walt Disney Animation Studios!

3. Several of his movies are based on drawings that he made when he was a kid! He made several drawings of Edward Scissorhands and Jack Skellington when he was younger. And Frankenweenie was based on a childhood dog he had.

4. The dog in Frankenweenieis just the cutest!

5. One of Tim's favorite characters he's ever come up with is Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas. In fact, version of Jack can be seen in cameos in Tim's other movies!

You can spot him in James and the Giant Peach, Alice in Wonderland, Coraline and Sleepy Hollow! It's time to rewatch those movies!

6. Even though he directed Planet of the Apes, Tim actually has a huge fear of chimpanzees! "You don't know whether chimps are going to kill you or kiss you. They're very open on some levels and much more evil in a certain way."

7. Good for him! It's all about tackling your biggest fears!

8. Before making feature-length movies, he made two short films: Vincentand Frankenweenie.Disney actually fired Tim after they saw the stop-motion short and thought it was too scary and dark for kids.

9. Jokes on Disney because 30 years later they hired him back to direct the full-length feature movie of Frankenweenie

10. When Tim and Helena Bonham Carter were together, she refused to live with him because she couldn't handle Tim's snoring. So they lived in separate apartments!

11. Tim knew that he wanted Johnny Depp for Edward Scissorhands because he saw Johnny's work on 21 Jump Street and knew he would be perfect for the role!

13. He might not have gotten over his fear of chimps but Planet of the Apes is a very special movie to him. That's where he met Helena! 

14. Tim was such a huge fan of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street that he saw the musical on Broadway three times! 

15. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a huge box office success but it was tough getting the movie made. Tim had fights with Warner Bros. because they wanted Willy Wonka to be a "father figure."

"Willy Wonka is not a father figure! If that's your idea of a father figure, yikes. Willy Wonka's a weirdo," Tim said. 

16. Tim said that he gets sad that the media portrays him as odd and reclusive. He's said many times before in interviews that he's just misunderstood and that he's a cheery and happy person!

17. Tim and Johnny have both said that their professional and personal relationship is so important to them. They've said that they want to work together for the rest of their lives!

18. While he was at Disney, his first movie that he ever worked on with the company was The Fox and the Hound!

19. The Fox and the Hound was such a good movie!

20. Tim said that working on Batman Returns was difficult because the live penguins were the biggest divas on set!

21. He wears pinstripe socks as a lucky charm for his movie premieres and other special occasions.
