As a kid, I loved the circus. What's more exciting than an elephant doing party tricks to amuse the crowd? But as I grew older, I quickly learned how horrible circuses really are. Almost 96% of a circus animal's life is spent in chains or cages. Small confined spaces, very little freedom and exercise, circus animals live a miserable life in captivity. Is it any wonder then that Raju the elephant cried upon being released?

That's what's great about the internet. People capture and document their release of mistreated circus animals, raising awareness and showing the impact circuses have on animals. Take Mufasa as an example. In Peru, the use of wild animals in circuses is banned, so Animal Defenders International (ADI) committed themselves to tracking and releasing each one. Mufasa was the last of them, as ADI, along with riot police, discovered the last circus and released Mufasa after 20 years of being chained in a rusty pickup truck.
