Cryptic Pregnancy And Denial Can 'Hide' Whether Someone Is Pregnant

It's hard to fathom that a woman could be pregnant for an entire nine months and not notice it. We associate 'normal' pregnancy with big baby bellies, an insatiable appetite, and large sweeping baby movements, but this isn't always the case. One out of every 475 pregnancies go completely unnoticed and are considered 'cryptic pregnancies.'

The following video reenacts a situation where a teenager, Amber, goes to the hospital and gives birth to a baby that she had no idea even existed. The situation highlights the reality of unknown pregnancies.

For most, pregnancy has a clear set of experiences.

There is the classic baby bump.

Or when you start noticing that your baby is super squirmy in there.

Some women go through nine months of pregnancy without ever knowing they were carrying a child.

Many people who experience "cryptic pregnancy" have a normal menstrual cycle, causing them to assume that they aren't pregnant. Excess weight can also contribute to unknown pregnancies.

Other times, a denial of pregnancy can result from misconceptions about sex and pregnancy, a situation that is characterized by Amber's story. After experiencing labor pains unexpectedly, ER doctors and nurses rushed to deliver the unexpected child.

The whole incident resulted from a major misunderstanding about the mechanics of conception.

The couple thought that it was impossible for her to get pregnant if they had sex standing up. Here is a screenshot of a doctor explaining "the birds and the bees" to Amber's boyfriend, who is shocked at this news.

To say the least, Amber's father was shocked, as are most families when this type of pregnancy occurs.
