1. The Cause?
Chapped lips are often caused by dehydration, especially in the winter. Another cause? Constantly licking your lips. It may provide very brief relief, but overall, it just makes your lips more dry.
2. Plain is Best
When you choose a lip balm for those dry months, remember: the plainer the better. Choose a lip balm that's an emollient (a moisturizer designed to soften the lips and add moisture).
3. Beware the Smells
Those cute and colorful Chapsticks may be tempting, but they're also super drying to your lips. Stay away from lip balms with menthol and eucalyptus as well, as they can be irritating.
4. No Touching!
Don't pick off the flaking skin. It will just leave your lips raw and even more irritated than before. Just apply balm.
5. Be Gentle
Exfoliating is great for your lips. Just rub gently insmall circles and remember to moisturize afterwards.
6. Apply Often
When you find the perfect lip balm, apply it often. You should apply when you wake up, before you sleep, and periodically throughout the day. That will help keep your lips from drying out.
7. Vitamin A
Taking too much vitamin A might be the cause of your chapped lips. Watch your intake, and lower it if necessary.
8. SPF is Your Friend
Your lips are probably the last think you think of on a nice sunny day, but they need protection too. Find a lip balm with SPF so your lips don't end up sunburned or chapped.
9. Cover Up
In the winter, wear a scarf to protect your lips. This will keep the harsh wind off them and keep moisture in!
10. Humidify!
Use a humidifier indoors. These devices provide the moisture your lips and skin crave. It’s great to have one at work as well as at home, especially in the winter. Turn it on at night to replenish your skin while you sleep.
11. Water!
The number one trick to drive away chapped lips? Stay hydrated. Drinking enough water has many benefits and moist lips are just one!
12. Doctor
If dry, chapped lips are a constant thing for you, perhaps it's time to see a doctor! Better safe than sorry.
