15 Facts About 'Pretty Woman'

Pretty Womancame out in 1990 but it still remains a classic movie to this day. There's no denying the on-screen chemistry between Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, and their love story is one for the books. We took a look back on all the interesting facts on how this movie was made, and put together the 15 best ones for you.

1. Julia Roberts plays Vivian Ward in Pretty Womanbut the role was originally offered to Molly Ringwald. Molly has said that she regrets turning the role down.

Big mistake. Big. Huge. 

2. Julia was not a very well known actress at the time, and she only landed the role because so many other actresses (besides Molly) turned it down. Among them included: Winona Ryder, Meg Ryan, Karen Allen, Jennifer Connelly and Michelle Pfeiffer. 

3. Edward Lewis is played by Richard Gere, but he actually almost turned down the role. It wasn't until Julia slid him a post-it note with "please say yes" written on it that he accepted the part.

4. Other actors that were up for the role of Edward Lewis were: Christopher Reeve, Daniel Day-Lewis, Denzel Washington, and Al Pacino. 

5. The scene where Vivian is watching I Love Lucyon the floor,  Director Garry Marshall was actually tickling Robert's feet in order to get a genuine laugh from her. 

6. The red coat that Vivian wears was actually bought for $30 from a movie usher in the street just before they started filming. 

7. Julia's head is actually photo-shopped over top of Shelley Michelle's body for the movie poster. Also, notice how Richard Gere's hair is brown here, but gray in the movie? Oops!

8. The role of Kit was offered to Demi Moore, but she declined. 

9. Richard Gere is actually playing the piano in this scene. He even composed a song for the movie. 

10. Pretty Woman is technically a Disney movie. The Walt Disney Studios released hundreds of movies under Touchstone Pictures including Dead Poets Society, Father of the Bride, and Pearl Harbor.

11. During the bedroom scene, Julia was so nervous that a vein on her forehead bulged out. The director and Richard had to massage the vein until it disappeared. 

12. After Julia's vein disappeared, she broke into hives and had to be covered in calamine lotion until they could finally shoot the scene. 

13. This scene where Edward snaps the necklace case down on Vivian's fingers was improvised. Julia's reaction was completely natural, and the director liked it so much that they kept it. 

14. Speaking of the necklace... It was worth $250,000 and an armed security guard from the jewelry store had to accompany it everywhere on set.

15. The movie was originally titled 3000 because that was Vivian and Edward's agreed upon amount for the week. It was changed to Pretty Womanwhen Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman" was added to the soundtrack.
