Ellen DeGeneres Receives Medal From Obama And Makes Everyone Cry Happy Tears

SHARE
This week, Barack Obama gave out the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom to 21 recipients, including Ellen DeGeneres. The medal is the highest civilian award that can be given in the United States and is given to civilians who contribute substantially to issues related to world peace as well as other significant cultural endeavors. The Medal of Freedom has classically been given out to honor contributions to civil rights issues in the United States.

You have to see the moment when Ellen received the award... priceless.

At a time when it was still very unpopular to come out as a homosexual in public, Ellen DeGeneres stood up and proudly let the world know that she was a lesbian.

If you don't remember it, it was a huge moment in U.S. history.

Ellen even had a "coming out" episode on her ABC sitcom Ellen, marking one of the first times that a major character on mainstream television came out as being gay.

There's no doubt that she has been one of the biggest, if not the biggest, driver of LGBTQ awareness that the world has ever seen.

Everyone is talking about the incredibly emotional ceremony in which Ellen received the medal from President Obama.

When she stands up next to Barack Obama when her name is called, you can tell the moment is already beginning to overtake her.

White House staff had these very kind words to say about Ellen's significant contributions. You can see how she can barely believe what is happening as she listens.

“At a pivotal moment, her courage and candor helped change the hearts and minds of millions of Americans, accelerating our nation's constant drive towards equality and acceptance for all," one staffer said.

He continued by saying, "Ellen DeGeneres has showed us that a single individual can make the world a more fun, more open, more loving place, so long as we just keep swimming."

The moment Obama goes to put on the medal is too amazing...

Here is Obama putting the medal around her neck with Bill Gates sitting in the background, no big deal.

This photo says it all, doesn't it?

Here is Ellen looking up at Obama after having received her medal.

What an incredible moment for her and so many others in the LGBTQ community.
