Barbie has become a staple in children's toy collections. Typically, Barbie has been known to have a slim figure, blue eyes, and blonde hair.
But in recent years, Mattel has been expanding their line and introducing dolls of different races and body shapes.
And now they're continuing to show their commitment to diversity by releasing a doll that wears a hijab!
At the Glamour Women of the Year event, Mattel announced that they would be releasing a new doll as a part of their Shero collection.
The doll is modeled after Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad.
Ibtihaj was the first-ever U.S. Olympic athlete to compete wearing a hijab during the 2016 Rio Olympic games. And now, her doll will be the first to wear a hijab!
Ibtihaj's Barbie will join other "Sheroes" including Ashley Graham, Zendaya, Gabby Douglas, Misty Copeland, Ava DuVernay, and Kristin Chenoweth.
"I’m proud to know that little girls everywhere can now play with a Barbie who chooses to wear hijab! This is a childhood dream come true," she wrote on Instagram.
This is so exciting! This is a step in the right direction for Mattel.
Children should be playing with dolls that reflect them so they can feel represented. And who wouldn't want to play with a doll who's an accomplished director or a world-class fencing champion?!
SHAREif you love the people they chose for the Sheros collection!
