Single Mom Misses Class—And The Response From Her Lecturer Goes Viral

SHARE
University of Tennessee student Morgan King knows all too well the difficulties that come with being a single mom as well as a college student.

So when her childcare fell through and she was forced to skip class, Morgan emailed her lecturer to apologize. The response from her lecturer left her speechless, and when she posted the message on Twitter, the internet applauded…

1. Managing childcare and a college workload is a juggling act — and its difficulty is multiplied when you are a single mom.

2. Morgan King, who is studying therapeutic recreation at the University of Tennessee, had been struggling to find childcare that fit in with her university commitments.

Morgan had recently lost her own mother to cancer and was going through a tough time.

3. One day, when her childcare arrangements fell through, Morgan emailed her lecturer to explain her absence and apologize.

The response she received from her lecturer, Professor Sally Hunter of the Department of Child and Family Studies, made her weep.

4. Professor Hunter told Morgan she wouldn’t be penalized for her absence and explained how she could catch up.

And she had a solution for any time Morgan has childcare issues in the future.

5. “In the future, if you are having trouble finding someone to watch Korbyn, feel free to just BRING HER with you to class,” Professor Hunter wrote.

“I would be absolutely delighted to hold her while I teach, so that you can still pay attention to the class and take notes.”

6. “I am very serious about this offer,” Professor Hunter continued. “Just bring Korbyn with you!”

7. But it was the last line of her professor's email that was the most moving.

“Let me know if there are any other ways I could be supporting you.”

8. Morgan was so moved that she posted the email to Twitter.

“'Told my professor I missed class yesterday bc I couldn't find childcare & this was her response. I'm literally crying. So blessed/thankful.”

9. The internet applauded this simple act of kindness. Morgan’s tweet also caught the attention of University of Tennessee Chancellor Beverly Davenport, who tweeted:

“Morgan, thanks for showing us challenges college students face. Prof Hunter, thanks for being part of the solution.”
