Only 60% Of People In Japan Figured Out This Equation. Did You?

SHARE
Recently in Japan, this standard math problem exploded. Only 60% of people around the 20-year-old age range could figure it out. That doesn't seem like a horrible amount, but the real kicker is that 90% of people were able to get the correct answer in the 1980s.

Here is the culprit:

"Hey, this seems easy."

For some people, the question may seem easy, whereas for others it may seem a bit tough. The reason there was such a large decrease in people solving the question is due to the fact that technology has become so prominent and easily accessible.

But what caused this problem?

Calculators, smartphones — you name it. Society as a whole basically has some form of calculator readily available. Gone are the days of solving equations in our heads.

Still can't figure it out?

Don't worry, you're not the only one. Thankfully, the solution is a super easy one. You'll know it as soon as you see it!

Thanks, Captain Obvious.

How you go about solving the equation is actually very simple. You may or may not remember BEDMAS from elementary school, but that's all it takes!

BEDMAS

BEDMAS is the order of operations. What this refers to is what part of an equation you are to complete first. Each letter represents a component: 1. B - Brackets, 2. E - Exponents, 3. D - Division, 4. M - Multiplication, 5. A - Addition, 6. S - Subtraction.

Now that you know the order of operations, give the equation a try and compare your answer with the one in the video below.

So, how did you do?
