There Are Finally Plans In The Works For A Redhead Emoji

SHARE
Next week, Apple will be hosting a Unicode Technical Committee meeting to discuss the addition of an emoji option for redheaded characters. Unicode is the standardization committee in charge of emojis on all messaging platforms. Since their jump from Japanese mobile phones to international, each release by Unicode contains new icons to reflect the diversity of cultures and tastes around the world. In the most recent release, food options such as avocados and potatoes were added, as well as the long-needed "fingers crossed" emoji.

The proposal for how to implement a redheaded option was tabled by Jeremy Burge, founder of Emojipedia.

His proposal includes a couple of options for how the emoji could work, from simply adding a new one for a person with red hair to creating a custom hair tag that, when set, would change the hair color for every single emoji on the device.

Even though different phones have different emoji styles, they all have to adhere to the standard set by Unicode.

So, if your friend Joan wanted to send a smiley to Peggy from her iPhone, the correct emoji will display even on Peggy's Android phone.

While talks have started and a proposal has been written, don't expect to see a redhead in the next update.

Unicode 10.0 launches in a few months, so there isn't time to get the change into the 2017 release.

Hopefully, a ginger standard is created in time for the 2018 Unicode release.

Otherwise, I'm not sure what the redheads will do.
