20 Reasons Why 2008 Was The Year Pop Culture Peaked

SHARE
Let's face it, 2017 has been...tough. From unicorn-inspired beverages to detachable jeans, one can't help but crave a simpler time. A time when cellphones still had slide-out keyboards and teen girls cried everywhere to T-Swift's "Our Song" while riding shotgun with their hair undone, back when Taylor Swift still sang country music. Here are 20 reasons why 2008 was the year that captivated us all.

1. Unnecessary Vests

A vest was a statement. It says "Hey, I'm layering unnecessarily and I'm confident about it!" And boy, was the world confident in 2008. Everyone was walking around in what appeared to be an unfinished three piece suit.

2. We Got The Best Of Both Worlds

Before everyone and their brother made a 3D Concert Movie, both Miley AND Hannah blessed our screens with the most iconic film of our time. Both stars, one stage. Not to mention The Jo Bros were her opening act, making it truly a fantasy concert. They just don't make concerts like that anymore. Does Adele emerge in the second half of her show as a different pop star? I didn't think so.

3. Club Penguin Was The Hottest Spot In Town

Who can forget the stress of the Pizza Parlor? That game prepared me for life in the restaurant biz faster than any training shift could have.

4. High School Musical Ended An Era On The Big Screen

WHAT TEAM??!! I bawled my eyes out in the theater, and I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.

5. The Suite Life Went On Deck

Mr. Moseby on a luxury cruise ship? Yes please.

6. The Jonas Brothers Were Kings Of The Universe

The Jonas Brothers were revolutionaries — don't fight me on this. No band of brothers will ever have such great hair or such skinny jeans. "Burnin' Up" was the song of the summer, destined to remain stuck in your head for all of eternity.

7. The Drama Was Top Notch

Remember when Miley and her backup dancer Mandy spoofed Demi and Selena's Youtube video, thus sparking beef that has lasted nearly 10 years later? #neverforget. My best friend and I also mocked the iconic video months later with our own webcam skills, but surprisingly, it did not take off quite like Miley's did. If you haven't rewatched the saga since '08, I'd highly recommend it.

8. Twilight Shook The World To Its Core

Because vampires and werewolves were *soOoOO* sexy! What? Why? They literally killed people for recreation and survival. How terrifying is that? I spent the whole movie with my Areopostale hoodie pulled over my eyes.

9. Everyone's Fav OTP Was Reunited

Revolutionary Road saw Kate and Leo together again on the big screen, the way they *always* should be. Yeah it was pretty dark, but still, look at the way she looks at him!!!

10. Shutter Shades

Because nothing was cooler than seeing nothing at all. Everyone rushed to the nearest Claire's to pick up every color of these glasses. We'd then proceed to take amazing peace sign, duck face selfies and edit them on picnik.com for our MSN Chat profile pics. Ah, the good ol' days.

11. Camp Rock Blessed Our Tube TVs

Remember when Demi had bangs?! Fringe boots?! When Kevin straightened his hair? Wore that scarf? That unnecessary vest? All so iconic. I skipped the whole day of school to emotionally prepare for this masterpiece and I was NOT disappointed.

12. Cell Phones Were Just That — Phones

Social Media is fun and all, but remember when your phone could slide out to a full keyboard? Remember when you'd accidentally press the "Internet" app and literally lose your shit as you tried to escape from the unknown vortex of that kind of luxury? This is literally a fossil now.

13. We Rocked Apple Bottom Jeans & Boots With The Fur

Flo Rida blessed us with "Low," prepping us for the clubs we were still years away from getting into, whilst forever reminding us of the year's hottest trends.

14. We Put A Ring On It

Speaking of iconic bops, Beyonce's "Single Ladies" quickly became the girl power anthem of a generation. It also quickly became the focus of one of SNL's most iconic sketches. This is, however, unsurprising. Who doesn't want to watch Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg don black bodysuits and heels while they drop it low to the flo'?

15. Sex And The City Was Resurrected

Look, was the movie hot garbage? Yes. However, did I cry throughout the entire thing? Absolutely. Something about these ladies reuniting in the *hoTteSst* trends of the year is enough to give me nostalgic feels deep within my spirit. Also, Fergie sang the movie's theme song, "Labels or Love" — does it get more 2008 than that?

16. The Princess Of Pop Resurfaced

Everyone knows 2007 was a bad year for Brit Brit. There was a shaven head. Aggressive use of umbrellas. Gray, oversized hoodies. Circus served as a rebirth for the princess of pop, which is why she continues to stay iconic — she knows how to keep it movin'. Circus was released with iconic jams such as "Womanizer," "If U Seek Amy," and "Radar." Get real.

17. WALL-E Made E.T. Look Basic AF

Pixar doesn't play games. That was clear upon the release of WALL-E. WALL-E became the new E.T, enthralling literally everyone in his adorable space adventures.

18. Everyone Was Fascinated By Michael Phelps' Diet

Sure, he broke world records at the Beijing Olympics, but remember when he said he ate 12,000 calories a day?! I also tried the diet, and weirdly enough, did not become an Olympic athlete by the end of it.

19. The Pussycat Dolls Were Still Relevant

Don't even try to tell me you didn't cry to "I Hate This Part," or felt inspired by "When I Grow Up." 2008 gave us banger after banger from Nicole Scherzinger + co.

20. Usher Released The Ultimate Club Banger

"Love in This Club" proved to not only be white hot in 2008, but nine years later it is still on every pre-game playlist I make. It's the perfect combo of dance and *bABy MaKinG* music. Everything about this song is flawless. Also, everything about Usher is flawless.
