9 Behind-The-Scenes Rules For Every First Lady

SHARE
For as long as I can remember, I've always wanted to be the First Lady of the United States. I mean, it seems like a pretty easy gig, right? You let your spouse do all the tough stuff and you just kind of hang out, look good and have a good time. Well, unfortunately for me, this dream has never come true, and upon further research, I've discovered that the job might not be as easy as it sounds. Check out these rules for every First Lady.

1. A First Lady doesn't have to be the President's wife.

There have been several instances where a daughter, niece, or even daughter-in-law accepted the role.

2. A First Lady is expected to support a wide range of charities and organizations.

As perhaps the most influential woman in America, a First Lady spends a lot of her time visiting charitable organizations, creating her own charities, and spreading kindness throughout the country.

3. A First Lady does not have to live in The White House.

Take Melania Trump, for example. She will remain in New York with her son while her husband moves into the White House.

4. A First Lady must dress in a manner that is respectful to the beliefs of any nation or culture she is visiting.

5. A First Lady has to be well-versed in the appropriate greetings and customs of a country before she visits it.

6. A First Lady does not get paid and can't accept gifts over a certain amount.

Everything from her travel, living space and personal protection is covered by the government however.

7. The Office Of The First Lady is responsible for all social and ceremonial events at The White House.

8. A First Lady must be politically involved without assuming the political privileges of an elected official.

9. A First Lady is expected to support her spouse's campaign by giving speeches and attending events.
