Couple With Down Syndrome Proves Skeptics Wrong, Celebrating Their 22nd Wedding Anniversary

In 1995, Maryanne and Tommy Pilling were married. They're thought to be the first married couple with Down syndrome in the U.K. Now it's 2017 and they're defying the assumptions of many by celebrating their 22nd happy year of marriage.

Tommy and Maryanne were dating for 18 months before he proposed. They got married at a church in Essex, fulfilling Maryanne's childhood dream of a big white wedding.

Maryanne is now 45, and Tommy is 59.

"Tommy and I never argue. I love my husband very much. He is my best friend," Maryanne said.

Many families look to the couple as proof that those with Down syndrome can live long, happy lives with people they love.

Maryanne's mother Linda didn't hesitate to agree when Tommy asked her if he could propose to her daughter. He had only a toy ring from a vending machine to give her.

Her assent was immediate, and she took him to a shop to buy a real engagement ring.

For their 20th anniversary in 2015, Maryanne and Tommy renewed their vows, proving all those naysayers wrong for good.

They are an inspiration to us all!
