Why The Houseboat Of The Future Looks Like A Flying Saucer

SHARE
When you're trying to carve out a niche in an industry, you have to find something that makes you different from all the rest. With a few exceptions — Coke and Pepsi, Crest and Colgate — you can't make what's essentially the same as your competitor and hope to succeed.

You wouldn't think it would matter that much in the world of houseboats. But a radical new design shows that standing out in any industry is a good thing. Hey, if you're going to go houseboating, go boldly!

Just like their land-based counterparts, houseboats come in many forms, from the ramshackle to the practical to the luxurious.

Whether you'd rather be the king of your castle or the skipper of your boat is a matter of preference.

However, we're confident you've never seen anything like the Unidentified Floating Object.

This flying saucer-shaped design defies all logic and expectations from a houseboat.

These far-out houseboats are the brainchild of Italian watercraft designer Jet Capsule.

They have a history of making things that look...different, like their signature alien pod-like boats.

And these things sure look different.

Different and cool. But there's more to the design than just stand-out looks — there's a method to Jet Capsule's madness...

At the surface, the Unidentified Floating Object is about 40 feet in diameter.

With a wide, flat platform, the designers think it's unsinkable. Yes, we've heard that before.

All the living happens in the middle of the saucer.

At surface level and above, there's a kitchen, living room, and dining room, with a 7'2" ceiling.

A ladder leads down from the kitchen/living/dining area to a bedroom and bathroom.

And there's a big, wide window to get a view of all the action going on under the sea. Who needs TV with a view like that?

When you want a change of scenery, you can fire up the 80hp electric motor and putter away.

With a top speed of 3.5 knots (4 mph) you're not going to break any speed records, but hey, it's a floating UFO.

And the designers want it to be as self-sustaining as possible...

To get power, the top of the UFO hinges open to reveal 430 square feet of solar panels.

And if the sun isn't shining, turbines can collect power from the wind and water. It all gets stored in batteries inside.

There's a water generator to make sea or rain water drinkable, and the deck holds a vegetable garden. Supplement that with fishing and you'll keep your trips to the grocery store to a minimum.

And for those trips, you would take your jet capsule, naturally.

The Unidentified Floating Object isn't in production just yet.

Jet Capsule is still working up a prototype. But if their designs are any indication, they're going to make a big splash in the future.

You have to admire the guts it takes to take such a risk on a design. If nothing else, you can rest assured nobody else has come up with anything like it — and even if they did, how could they possibly pretend it's anything but a knock-off?

We'll have to keep our eyes trained on the seas to try to spot one of these in action, hopefully one day soon.
