As a society, we rely on the good nature of people to keep ourselves protected. When that fails, we have the police in place to uphold order and civility. Sadly, this is extremely hard to do when you can't be everywhere at all times. Another thing that makes it difficult are the weapons in circulation. Having to deal with a fully armed person is extremely dangerous and presents a tough situation to handle. That's precisely why so many police forces have opted for a special forces-type approach, allowing them to have highly trained officers to handle any situation thrown at them. Here are eight of the most intense police departments that do exactly that.

1. Grupo de Operaciones Especiales of Mexico (GOPE)

The Mexican special forces police unit are an elite unit tasked with capturing or killing the worst criminals. There are only 87 officers in this elite unit.

2. Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)

According to legend, the RCMP always gets the criminal. They have one of the world's best programs — which includes six rigorous and isolated months of training.

The RCMP also does municipal policing.

3. Special Task Force of Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan special forces are tasked with counter-terrorism operations.

They even helped Chinese police officers prepare for the Olympics.

4. Grenzschutzgruppe 9 der Bundespolizei (GSG 9)

The GSG 9, a German elite police unit, was formed in response to the Munich Massacre. They are considered to have some of the most elite officers in the world.

5. Junglas of Colombia

The Junglas operate in the jungles of Colombia, where many of the drug plants are hidden. They were trained by U.S. Special Forces and Britain's SAS, so you know they're elite.

6. U.S. Marshal Service

The U.S. Marshals are one of the hardest special units to get into. Only about 5% of officers who apply to the Marshals are accepted into training.

7. Yamam of Israel

The Yamam of Israel was founded after the 1974 massacre at Ma'alot. The purpose of the Yamam is to handle future terrorist plots with precision and expertise.

8. French Police Nationale (RAID)

This is the elite force that's deployed when President Obama arrives in Paris. They're nicknamed the Black Panthers because of their all-black outfit.

They are so elite that there are only 60 officers in the unit, each of which has picked their own weapon.
