12 Behind-The-Scenes Facts About 'Atonement'

SHARE
I hated reading Atonement in high school. I found it so boring that I ended up completely relying on SparkNotes to write my essay. Shh! Don't tell Mrs. Bauder, my English teacher! So when the movie came out, I was excited because I could finally understand what the story was about instead of picking up the book to read. And it's become one of my favorite movies ever! I loved the story, the fashion, the actors and the sets. If you loved the movie just as much as I did, then you'll love reading about what happened behind the scenes when they were making the movie!

1. The famous green dress that Keira Knightley wears in the movie has been named "The Best of All Time" by several magazines! That means it topped the list over Audrey Hepburn's little black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany'sand Marilyn Monroe's white dress in The Seven Year Itch.

I adore that dress!

2. The director and cinematographer came up with this weird method to create a unique visual style for the movie. They used Christian Dior stockings that were stretched over the camera lens to get that soft focus look.

Well, that's one way to use designer stockings!

3. Saoirse Ronan was 12 years old when Atonement started filming. And she was 13 years old when she received her first Oscar nomination.

Uh... okay. What were you doing when you were 13? I'm pretty sure I was trying to just get through homework while Saoirse was nominated for an Oscar!

4. The director said on the DVD commentary that the steamy library scene with Keira and James McAvoy's characters was easier to film because of the design of the dress Keira had on.

The designer of the beautiful dress deliberately kept the seam down the middle of the skirt open (when it would normally be sewn shut!) for what the director called "easy access" for the characters so the flowy dress wouldn't get in the way.

5. The author refused to write the screenplay because he said it would be "a little dull" to go ahead and redo the novel.

6. James said that the Atonement script was the best he had ever read.

Couldn't you just stare into James' bright blue eyes for hours?

7. That scene where Briony stands next to the stained glass window wasn't done by accident. The window features Saint Matilda, the patron of falsely accused people.

*GASP* It all makes sense now!

8. In the movie, Briony is played by three different actors throughout the movie. The director had Saoirse, Vanessa Redgrave, Romola Garai work together to create Briony's movements and body language so certain things could remain the same as Briony aged in the story.

9. Initially, the director wanted Keira to play Briony in her late teens but Keira said she would only do the movie if she could play Cecilia. She didn't want to keep playing characters who were the age of just becoming a woman. She wanted to play a more mature character!

Keira made a perfect Cecilia. Nobody could replace her!

10. Keira and James both agreed that there was instant chemistry between them. They met at rehearsals and instantly became friends.

11. This was the first movie that Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira worked on. They became good friends on set and ended up filming The Imitation Game together.

The two of them were nominated for Oscars for The Imitation Game!

12. Everyone on set agreed that Saoirse was the best actor on set. People couldn't believe that she was only 12 years old. James and Keira both said that they loved working with her and that she was the heart of the movie.
