16 People With 'Better' Security Than Fort Knox

16 People With 'Better' Security Than Fort Knox

It's nice to wish for a world where we didn't need to lock anything up. Sadly, such a world doesn't exist. Heck, even Canadians lock things up – which makes sense if you've seen the price of maple syrup.

That said, if you're going to treat your valuables like they actually have some value, you can't take half measures. Give a thief an inch, they'll take a mile. Apparently, the folks below didn't get that memo, though. Prepare to apply your palm to your face.

1. This security system isn't exactly "top drawer." Hey-o!

2. If good fences make good neighbors, what does this make?

3. So, what, does the door just fly open on its own? Because that's the only reason to put six holes in your truck.

4. If nothing else, you'll never forget the combination to this lock...because it's a carabiner, not a lock.

5. When a bike is locked up in name only.

6. And if it's a scooter rather than a bike, that doesn't make it okay.

7. On the bright side, thieves might pick a car that's a bit more...up-market.

8. Biking is sweaty, sure, but come on...

9. Probably more of a subtle hint about what they want for Christmas than anything.

10. Clamps are great, but I'm not sure how much trust I would place in one.

11. Okay, that's different. If nothing else, it probably looks like too much work to steal.

12. I detect a slight problem with this system.

13. Guess thieves can test out the effectiveness of these cutters before making off with them.

14. Now there'sa security system that speaks to me.

15. When your security inadvertently helps thieves steal more.

16. One of these things is not like the other. One of these things just doesn't belong.

Guy Turns $160k Junky Duplex Into $300k Jackpot

Guy Turns $160k Junky Duplex Into $300k Jackpot

Before purchasing the duplex, Drisco had never embarked on a project this size before. His only handyman experience was from being forced to help his father around the house as a child. But armed with the power of YouTube and Google, with many hours of fatherly advice given via Facetime from Florida, he managed to turn the place from an outdated dump into a space fit for a design magazine.

Split into upper and lower units, the bottom apartment was in decent shape, but the top unit was an absolute disaster. Garbage was everywhere (dirty diapers under the bed!), and even after a bunch was moved out by the previous tenants, there was still over 1000lbs of junk for Drisco to clean out.

Before: the kitchen, living room, and bedroom.

Even after clearing out most of the junk (and selling some on Kijiji), there was still a ton to get rid of. I can only imagine the smell.

Before: master bedroom and bathroom.

The bathroom was outdated and dingy, and the master bedroom was particularly nasty.

Back to a blank canvas.

Once all the garbage was cleared out, it was time to tear out the old carpet and baseboards. The walls were painted a flat white

Ready for new floors!

Drisco knocked down a wall between the kitchen and living room, allowing the illusion of more space. With the flooring purchased, it was time to get started.

Don't worry, the tearing down process is almost always the worst part of any renovation. Next up: the fun parts!

New underlay installed.

To help with the noise between floors, Drisco splurged on a higher-end brand and taped all of the seams and edges to get as tight a seal as possible.

The flooring goes in.

To save money and reduce wasted boards, Drisco chose a staggered, brick-like layout for the flooring, which runs through every room except the kitchen. It's starting to look like a home again!

Onto the kitchen!

The dingy old flooring was replaced with large, dark tiles. To save some money, the original cabinets were retained, but painted a clean white to match the new space. A gap was left in the floor between the kitchen and the living room, where a bar would be installed.

Time for an accent wall!

Things are starting to get exciting! If you worried that the white walls were too plain, Drisco solves the issue with a pair of classy accent walls. They were a lot of trouble to do, but the results were worth it.

Can't put that bathroom off any longer.

Most of the bathroom tile had to be torn out, and afterwards, the walls required a lot of sanding and primer to smooth back out. The tiles were stuck on good. I'm having flashbacks to my own bathroom renovation. (Twitch.)

Bathroom tile goes down (and up).

The new floor tile runs right up into the bath enclosure, giving clean, modern lines to the narrow space. The new tile was installed over the old to save time.

Modernizing the old tub.

Instead of wasting money on a more modern tub, Drisco built out a frame in front of it. Lots of careful measuring and math was required to ensure a proper fit.

Bringing it all together.

Finally, the same tile as the floor and shower is used to cover the new enclosure. You'd think everything was built for a custom tub!

Drum roll, please!

Ta-da!

The final results are stunning. Each bedroom has its own look, while still feeling like they're part of the same space. The accent walls provide visual interest and also warm up the white walls.

A shiny new bathroom.

I love the way the new tub enclosure changes the whole look, and the wooden shelves provide a nice, natural balance to the room.

The kitchen now feels welcoming.

The bar provides a decent amount of seating while also opening up the space. You could now entertain a small group without feeling confined in the kitchen, away from your guests.

A comfortable, bright living space.

The pale floors and white walls really open up the space, making it seem larger than it is.

Good job, Drisco! The final result is stunning and modern, while still remaining comfortable. I could totally see myself living in a little place like that!

And you won't believe some of the love stories of these famous couples. They're equal parts cool and equal parts aww-worthy.

1. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds met on the set of Green Lantern but only realized their feelings for each other later on while they were on a double date with other people!

Now they have two children together. Ryan calls Blake his inspiration for everything.

2. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett met when she auditioned for the role of his girlfriend on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

"Jada is magical. Part of why I love her is things happen in a way they shouldn't happen, they shouldn't go that way. She has this magical power."

3. Hugh Jackman met Deborra-Lee Furness during his first acting job! She was the star and he was just starting out in his career. "When I met Deb, I knew 100%."

Awwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West met in 2004 but were only friends for years. But Kanye admitted that while they were friends, he knew she was it for him.

"I dreamed about being next to her and Kim is the most beautiful woman in the world." The wait was well worth it because they're now happily married with two children!

5. Tom Hanks met Rita Wilson on the set of a TV show and both of them knew it was meant to be right away.

"Rita and I just looked at each other and – kaboing – that was that. I asked Rita if it was the real thing for her and it just couldn't be denied."

Tom and Rita are a couple everyone should look up to!

6. Emily Blunt and John Krasinski met through friends and John remembers that he just stood there with his mouth open. He said it was love at first sight.

7. Ellen Degeneres and Portia de Rossi met backstage at an award show and it was love at first sight.

Cuteness overload. I can't with these couples!
