However, at 106, Virginia McLaurin is anything but fragile – rather, she knows how to bust a move.
Ellen DeGeneres would be proud.
Virginia pulled out her incredible dance moves when she had the opportunity to meet Barack and Michelle Obama at the White House this week. The 106-year-old’s enthusiasm was so contagious, she had the First Couple grooving along, with Michelle exclaiming, “I wanna be like you when I grow up.”
You know you’re a big deal when Michelle Obama wants to be you.
And it wasn't just her dancing that has people talking — it's the reason she was at the White House to celebrate...
“A black President... a black wife... and I’m here to celebrate black history... Yeah! That’s what I’m here for!” she continued.
In her 106 years on earth, Virginia has lived through monumental moments in history — she lived through Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s “I have a dream” speech, saw the first African American woman win an Oscar, and witnessed Barack Obama serve two terms as the first black President.
It’s something Virginia never thought she would witness in her lifetime. “I didn’t think I would live to see a Colored President because I was born in the South and didn’t think it would happen,” Virginia wrote in a White House petition in 2014 that helped launch her campaign to meet President Obama. "I know you are a busy man, but I wish I could meet you. I would love to meet you. I could come to your house to make things easier,” the letter continued.
This week, at 106, Virginia’s dreams came true, and despite the President being a busy man, she did go to Obama’s house.
She danced, she laughed, and she showed off her awesome manicure.
Virginia McLaurin — you may be the coolest 106-year-old around.
