Even police on duty have fatherly instincts. And when deputy officers Roger Garcia and Sam Rodriquez heard of a crisis involving three young children and a drunk driver, they quickly sprang into action.

The two officers arrived at the scene to find a 24-year-old man who had been driving drunk. In his car were his three young children, ages five, two and two months. Not only was it infuriating that a father was driving drunk with three young children in the vehicle, but the youngest child wasn’t even buckled in. Even worse, the children were starving and told the officers they couldn’t remember the last time they had eaten.

It was at that moment that the officers did something amazing…

With three little hungry children on the side of the road, the officers called for backup. But rather than wait until additional officers arrived, they went into action right away. Deputy Garcia started mixing baby formula in a cold water bottle along the side of the road. After heating the water with the car’s heater, Deputy Rodriquez then took over and fed the hungry baby, wrapping her in a small blanket. The officers also changed dirty diapers and ensured the children felt safe and secure in an otherwise scary situation.

These officers went above and beyond their roles as officers. Not only did they save these young children from a life-threatening situation, but they comforted them, fed them, and kept them safe — taking their level of service one step further.
