Airplane Seats Need To Be Put Up During Takeoff For Safety-Related Reasons

SHARE
As human beings, we're extremely curious animals. We have an issue with not knowing why or how something works, so it's only natural that we're full of questions when we're told to do something we're unfamiliar with. This is especially true when it comes to children because, let's be honest here, children love to question everything. One thing a lot of people question is why we're not supposed to use cell phones on planes. When a big question like that comes up, there's always someone who is quick to confuse everyone and scare them, which is probably where the "cellphones interfere with the plane" thing came up. While they sort of do, it's more-so just a bit of static for the pilot's radio, so it's more a nuisance than anything. Unfortunately, some safety-related flying tips are actually quite frightening once you figure them out.

So, which of the many tips am I talking about?

I'm speaking specifically about the "place your seat in the upright position during takeoff" tip.

There's no doubt in my mind that many people have questioned the reason behind it.

So, what's the reason?

Surprisingly, there's actually a pretty simple answer, which is safety, but it goes deeper than that.

According to Brian Manning, a flight attendant for Mesa Airlines, "When the seat is up, it is locked. When the seat is back, it's not locked."

Basically, the seat being locked will prevent you from getting whiplash. As is usual with the internet, one redditor had a slightly more ominous explanation.

If they're in any other position, there's no guaranteed safety.

"All the seats are tested for a very specific set of conditions, including seat up and table in the upright position," according to the user.

This means other ways may not be tested at all. Yikes!
