Have you ever wondered why you're paying upwards of $500 or even $1000 for a plane ticket? As you cram into your tiny seat and rub thighs with the person next to you for five hours, you get the feeling that the airline company is taking advantage of you. You might be surprised to hear that the fuel it takes to keep the plane in the air amounts to roughly $2.50 per person on a flight from New York to Washington D.C. Obviously, you wouldn't be paying $500 for a flight from NYC to DC, but still. So, what explains this additional cost? Pilot and attendant salaries? Nope, not even close.
The majority of the cost comes from the maintenance and initial cost of the plane. Microcracks that accumulate as a result of repeated pressurization and stress on the body of the aircraft adds up and is related most to how often a plane takes off and lands (a cycle). You definitely need to check out this video that breaks down, dollar-by-dollar, what your ticket fee goes to. At the end of the day, it looks like the airlines are being pretty nice to us...
