It was a Saturday night patrol when Corporal Kirk Keffer came across 19-year-old Jourdan Duncan walking alone in the Benicia industrial park.
When he asked Duncan why he was out so late, the teen explained that he was walking home from his evening job nearby, a walk that he spends two hours of his day making to and from Vellejo every day. The Corporal offered Duncan a ride home.
While they drove, Duncan told Corporal Keffer about how he was saving money to go to college where he wants to study to be a CHP officer.
Though Duncan had a car, it was broken and he couldn't afford to fix it while also saving for school. His dream was more important, so he decided to walk.
Corporal Keffer was impressed and shared the story with the Benicia Police Officer's Association, hoping to find a way to help Duncan. They decided to buy the teen a bicycle.
With help from local store Wheels in Motion, they purchased a full kit for Duncan: bike, headlamp, helmet, and a tune up! Then they surprised him at work with the gifts.
It hasn't stopped there, though. Wanting to help Duncan get his car fixed, the Benicia POA started a GoFundMe campaign to raise $5,000. It blew through that goal quickly!
They have now increased the goal to $50,000, to fund Duncan's college dream. As of this writing, they're almost there!
